Résumé

Large amount of boulders on the crest of a ridge near a prominent landmark (Balancing Rock).

Description

Balancing Rock (the main landmark at the centre of Boulderland) is one of three named peaks in White Rock Spring Mountain Conservation Park (the other two being Spring Mountain and White Rock themselves). Boulderland contains a large number of climbable boulders in the area surrounding balancing rock. The rock in this area needs a lot of cleaning but once cleaned it provides a good quality that is slightly rougher than that which is found in the main White Rock area (e.g. antiquity), but much less coarse than that found in the Bat Cave and Rat Cave. With development this area could contain substatially more problems than as yet developed area in either White Rock or Spring Mountain.

Limit. de l'accès hérité de Spring Mountain

The forest is Ipswich and Logan council reserve and has free access.

The areas deep in the forest are remote and have limited mobile reception. There is a maze of fire and logging trails throughout the forest and it is very easy to get lost. Always carry a GPS.

If you get hurt, lost or bitten by a snake rescue will be difficult and help will take a long time to arrive.

Similarly to White Rock, a rare plant, the Ruffled Plectranthus (Plectranthus habrophyllus), can be found growing on top of rocks here. Please don't disturb these. Check it out here: http://www.qldclimb.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/White-Rock-Rare-Plant-Notice-4Sep13.pdf

Approche

Park near the corner of Dublin Avenue and Kincraig Circuit (-27.694836, 152.896249). Carefully cut up through the bush to the gate at -27.695951,152.895979. Climb over the gate and shortly afterwards turn right onto the Yaddumun Trail (a fire road). Follow this up hill and then under the powerlines until you reach a termite mound on the left at (-27.6984494, 152.8899385). This is the bottom end of the Dragon Spine Trail. Follow the trail uphill past several other climbing areas (e.g The Demilitarised Zone, The Ledge etc) until you reach Boulderland. The walk time from car to boulders is approximately 40 minutes (hint - that means that it's only 10 minutes longer than going to Tatooine from the White Rock carpark!)

Éthique hérité de Spring Mountain

As for any bouldering area - don't chip. As this a new area, lots of cleaning will be required and loose flakes are inevitable - take care!

Please don't climb after heavy rain, the sandstone will be brittle and break.

Historique

Graphique de l'historique des voies

According the Glen Eaton, he and others explored this area circa 2007/08 and put up a handful of lines on a series of 8 boulders on flat ground downhill and below the main balancing rock ridgeline (in the direction of White Rock). This is the area currently (as of December 2021) referred to as "The Eight". According to Glen he and his friends put up about 6 problems up to V4 on these boulders, but another group of climbers told him that they had established a V10 on the boulder nearest to Spring Mountain. No record exists of these problems but Glen does have several photographs of the area from the time.

In 2021 first Aidan John and then Jack Mullaly made separate visits to Balancing Rock (the main landmark within Boulderland) and noted the area's potential for bouldering development. This led to it's inclusion on The Crag. In December 2021 Jack Mullaly began developing routes outside of The Eight.

Boulderland was the name for the area used by Glen Eaton et al and has been adopted herein as of December 2021 to refer to the area as a whole. The name Balancing Rock area is used to refer to a sub-area containing balancing Rock itself and nearby boulders.
