13 | The Artful Dodger - with Mel | 70m, 1 | Average
Climb 30 of 50. A good variety of fun climbing for a grade 13. Unfortunately, this is spoiled by the odd logistics of undertaking this climb. A 50m first pitch, with a dubious natural belay (tiny tree plus a couple of less than great placements), followed by a 20m 2nd pitch that ends with a double bolt belay as advertised, however the anchor bolts are just that - bolts only. No hangers, no chain, no way to rap unless you are prepared to leave a couple of your own bolt plates, plus a sling/prusik, and a bail bina/mallion. Even if you did manage to rap, you're 70m from the ground, so you'd need 2 joined 70m ropes, or be prepared to leave trad gear in the rock somewhere halfway down because it's too far to reach the rap anchors of neighbouring climbs (massive pendulum potential). Perplexing. We opted to traverse left from the pitch 2 bolt belay for about 15m, then rapped off a tree in order to gain the anchors on pitch 2 of Proven Guilty / Assumed Innocent. Another option would have been to have kept climbing upwards, eventually gaining the scrub, and then bush-bashing to the right to the hikers route and descend that. Such a shame. This climb would be much better if it had bolted rap anchors for both pitches. We strung both pitches together, but only because I had an 80m rope.

Climb 15 of 50. A tricky start. Otherwise nice climbing, although some marginal placements make for a sometimes daunting experience, especially the pitch 2 run out to the anchors. Had a bit of fun adding a 3rd pitch, though the climbing on P3 is somewhat spoiled by the 10m of bush bashing.

I led all pitches. It had been 18 years since I did the full climb (more recently only did the first 2 pitches). So was really good to do it again. Route finding gets a bit tricky after the 2nd pitch. The 3rd pitch traverse to the big corner has some new obstacles in the way (dead trees, vegetation, etc) that makes getting to the tree belay at the big corner rather awkward. The red cave is just how I remember it, and we even got to re-enact a silly photo we took there 18 years ago, ha ha. Did the pitch 6 alternative which provides much better climbing than the chimney but is completely unprotected. There is still about 15-20m of good climbing to be had straight off the pitch 6 tree belay as you are heading towards the final ridge summit approach, i.e. the obvious flake/crack which takes good gear and has some nice layback moves. Rather than scrambling all the way to the summit after what I'm going to call "Pitch 7" we noticed we were not too far from the East Beerwah route (grade 2 hiking route), so with fading light, and a covid lockdown imminent, we decided to scramble/walk across to the East Beerwah route and descend from there. Quite an interesting alternative to summiting and doing the tourist track descent. Was pretty tired at the end of it all - not as as spritely as I was 18 years ago apparently.

had to downclimb and redo the bottom section to get to the first bolt. some good placements and others marginal. Tried second pitch but felt that a long strech (~10m) without at least a good placement was not worth a try with my current physical and mental condition, as I also could not see the so called jug with a bolt close to it from where I was. Views are nice and it is a humbling route. I look forward to come back and do the second with with more confidence.

15 16 | ★ Proven Guilty (PG) (Proven Guilty) | 100m, 2 | ★ Good
P1: Hard starting moves before quite high first opportunity to place protection. The rest of P1 isn't terrible, as there are some reasonable pieces to place. But still scary for a 14. Holds also breaking off the wall. Some interesting moves. Seconded P1 cleanly, but would not have wanted to lead it. P2: The second pitch is nuts, at least 10m runout with no obvious opportunity to place protection after the first few meters. Must be super confident on slab at a few grades above 15 before attempting this dangerous climb for the grade. Big retreat from us.

Blew my lid on this one - got so frustrated that the crux move (much harder than 17) was soooooo far about a piece of gear (no other gear possible). They went to the trouble of putting chains on it, but not a single bolt on the 15m runout!? So much potential as the first half is great! With good pro too! Such a shame.

Straight away I pulled a flake off this wall, put some really great pro in and zoomed up to the first natural belay - excellent start. Next I climbed up for about 15meters and kept going straight.... bad idea.... it became very run out and the pro was awful. I discovered i climbed past the DBB 10m to the left..... had to down climb and head up an diagonally left. Next time it will not be so terrifying.
