Redemption! After last season's failure I had to try again. Definitely the hardest 18 I have tried here. Was an absolute pump fest and only got harder as the sun started peaking around the corner. Was stumped again at the move to the jug; its a pretty big commiting move if you aren't tall. Superb position and a great climb. Glad to have sent it so I never have to do it again. Thanks to Myles for the patient belay.

Second time up this one and it wont be the last. Just nice technical climbing the whole way with no obvious crux. A big surprise came about two thirds up when I encountered a sizable goanna (~1m long) wedged within the carack right above me. The initial shock of encountering a potentially discgruntled reptile while on lead almost sent me flying off the wall. Once I caught my composure I realised the poor goanna probably got more of a shock than I did and slowly squezed its way deep enough into the crack for me to gingerly climb around while appologising for disturbng its once peaceful morning.

what a day! 13hrs car to car, sunshine & cool breeze all morning followed by a shower around 2pm that spiced things up & finished up with a topout in the dark & rain. This ascent was the boys gift to roger for his 60th birthday, wanting to get him up a route he's been wanting to do for over 5years before he is no longer capable. Struggling with a bad hip, we knew the day would be long but we didnt realise at the time, just how long it would be. left the carpark at 8:50am & got back to the car just before 10pm! solid effort by everyone considering the lack of rope time we have all had lately. definitely would not recommend finding the "short cut" approach as we found ourselves between the 2 tracks bush bashing but in the end landed at egg rock. would have been more straight forward to continue up the hiking track then down the usual gulley to egg rock. Pitch 1 - lead by kyle who got straight into it with style. only necessary gear & cruised up. We stepped right onto the face under the left facing corner. Pitch 2 - led by me with a tricky move off the belay on small (but turned out to be solid) gear. Pretty cruisy from then up. Almost headed too far right at the big ledge but after careful consideration the obvious left trending ramp is easy to see if you look left after standing a little higher on the right side of the ledge. Solid tree belay in the bomb shelter. Pitch 3 - led by me again despite my best efforts to convince kyle to have a crack. was pretty nervous to be on the sharp end for the crux pitch but stepped up & had an absolute ball. Guide says up 4-5m to gnarly bush which is your first gear. I dont believe this bush is there anymore as the first bush i came across was the pine about 7-8m up. No way was i running it out to that. Managed to get about 2-3 pretty good bits of gear in before the pine then slung the second "gnarly" bush for a bomber piece. Cruised up to the ledge & through the crux on the 1 small wire. Didnt see the piton hiding behind the shrub in the top of the crack at the crux until i was looking down from the belay. while belaying the others up P3 we had a solid shower hit us, making it a bit tougher for the others to get up which soaked up a lot of time. Pitch 4 - needing to move i sent rhys straight up P4 being the most chill pitch of the route. He climbed it with ease even not having placed gear for a long time. Pitch 5 - racing to the summit before dark now, kyle set off around 5pm. Struggled a little to pick a side to climb & ended up traversing from left to right half way up. both darkness & rain set in after kyle had topped making the last pitch a battle for old roger & his bad hip but he got it done in good spirits. Both Rhys & I climbed P5 in the rain & dark. Thankfully Rhys had a working head torch as mine decided to clap out which made it really fun. Made haste to get off the mount ASAP as it was now nearly 7:30pm. Hard to find where to turn left down the gulley in the dark as every tree looked like a forked tree. Managed to find the creek bed & followed onto the trail which we promptly lost. Searched around for a bit but feeling we were too far right, back tracked a couple of times until we pulled up all trails & locked onto the hikers trail which we then followed easily out. Someone must have spotted our headtorches high on the mountain in the dark & called in the police to check on us. As we were nearing the bottom of the hiking trail & only 500m from the car, the police helicopter came circling overhead & called out to us to ask if we were ok. Thankfully we were fine but should we have needed assistance it would have been a blessing to see them. All in all a solid but great day out & one that none of us will be forgetting anytime soon.
