A pleasant and secluded crag set in the forested hillside above Egerkingen. Some quality lines and enough to keep most climbers busy.
Santelhöchi comprises six isolated and very different feeling sectors across 400m of densely wooded hillside.
Climbing style here is predominantly face and steep slab climbing on highly featured limestone. Good technique, footwork and a creative problem solving mind are required here.
A few routes have small bulges or overhangs to navigate but if you're looking for continuous steep climbing or pure power routes best to look elsewhere.
The first five sectors, approaching from the top have by far the best rock, the best climbing and longest routes. The last sector, Paladium, contains the smallest and least loved looking routes.
Despite being heavily wooded the area dries quickly meaning most of the routes are climbable even after a a night of heavy thunderstorms. Some of the harder climbs in Totentanz sector are prone to seepage making them somewhat stiffer until they dry out.
Bolts are generally well placed and closely spaced making this a low stress climbing area. Most of the routes in the upper five sectors have double bolted lower offs however care should be taken if climbing in Paladium given the use of single bolt anchors on less than ideal hangers.
Most of the routes have some loose rock so wearing a helmet is highly recommended and care should be taken with some of the larger looking blocks, especially on some of the easier climbs.
There are two possibilities for parking. Best is to park at the crossroads at 47.33898, 7.80514 and then walk down to the crag. There is space for 8 cars.
From the parking area cross the road (heading SE) and take the small path directly on the right. Walk downhill until you come out onto a forest road. Turn left and follow the road until it turns into a well trodden path. Follow the path until you reach the Alpenrose sector.
Did you know that you can create an account to record, track and share your climbing ascents? Thousands of climbers are already doing this.
