Gudhjem is the place where you first started smoking herring. In the summer, the herrings were smoked in the town's chimneys, which were used to smoke sausages in the winter. Around 1840, the smoked herring began to be sent to Copenhagen.
Holkadalen is a wide rift valley that stretches from Gudhjem and a good distance inland. Holkarenden is a small side valley with a series of really good boulder problems. The main attraction is the beautiful finger trail called Holkarisset, which is Holkadalen's only trad route. In Gudhjem, as well as north and south of the city, there are also a number of fine boulder problems and short routes which are described under "coastal rocks".
Café Klint on the harbor can be recommended for a refreshment when the climbing is over.
