Ascents climbed between 2022-07-01 and 2022-07-31 of Satan's Smokestack as trad or sport

Caterpillared this as our last climb at Frog for this trip. Site of amusing hex placements and elavatoring while we procrastinated at the bottom.

Entertaining end to the day. And made me feel like I hadn't wasted the whole thing waiting for flakey Queenslanders. It's not Labyrinth or Minotaur, but it's in the same vein

Attempted to clean on rap then got rope stuck.

Outrageous route, and hard to imagine such a chimney lurking at the back. Bring smaller gear for the inside

Crazy climb. Getting into this climb was really hard for me (apprently easier if you're tall?), once in the chimney is amazing. Exposed exit to the top.

second time doing Satans. Jacob was keen and i thought why not, might be a better experience this time round. I was a bit nervous going up the offwidth start without a number 5 but luckily Gerry Narkowisz (yeah the guide book guy!) from tazzie was doing infinity and he lent us his! unluckily, i actually needed a 6 but still, nice of gerry to lend me a cam. " so for the start of satans, sling the first 2 chockstones, then grab your silver BD hex and lob it into the V groove thats just out of reach from the good ledge. Do the obvious chockstone/offwideth moves to get to the first good holds to your right. Then its important that you FACE CLIMB the rest till you get into the chimney. This is the only way that i can see this climb being remotely a 16. trying to get up the offwidth with 15 cams and 10 draws on your harness is a nightmare. Although its unlikely you will fall in the chimney, it is exhausting and has you corkscrewing your way up in a dizzying way. Deserves 3* for just how unique it is, and how good the gear is.

wowee,what a position to be in. Didn't quite dawn on me until later just how crazy bonkers it is to climb inside the cliff.
