Didn't do this climb but just thought I'd comment that Bruce Cameron's fall must have added a metre per year. Me and Rob Starmer were on Elijah .. well probably a little off route on a dodgy ledge having a smoke to take the edge off when we saw it all .. offered some help but the fellas didn't need it. Was a classic moment though and pretty full on watching him ride the block into the sunset

Sustained and solid at the grade. Route and gear finding is often the crux. Thank god for the shiny bolted anchor next to the tree high up - it's the only good bolts on the climb. Great route!

Bit of confusion finding the best way in, might update the info at some point once sorted....
Anyway we finally got started and I linked the first 2 pitches without out too much difficulty but a bit of twin rope drag by the end, and unsure if it was the right belay I opted for the bunch of old slings and cam back up to bring Zac up... we moved the belay left and Zac headed up what might have been the correct route if my belay had been the right one, though it seems its the abseil/bail anchor (which is what it looks like...).... Anyway, Zach ran out far too much rope than he should have for the pitch and I followed finding the climbing a lot harder and more unnerving than expected for the grade if we were on the right route... A difficult to remove piece of gear or two and a crux getting to the belay left me feeling a little shattered... dropping my favourite chalk bag whilst taking my pack off at the belay kinda just topped it off... So no quite sure where we were and with my chalk bag to retrieve we placed a bomber wire and rapped off... Have worked out since that we must have done the Cameron/Moon gr. 20 variant pitch which probably explains why it felt more difficult than sub 17 climbing ... fair enough I reckon... Will be back soon to get the wire back, climb to the top and started working on the Classic Triple.... |

Did the Cameron/Moon 20 variant and possibly some other variations as some of the route description doesn’t match what we did ...
Done as 5 x 60m pitch’s more or less ... Thunderstorm rolled through to cool, and wet, us down in the upper pitches ... Great fun of the type you can only have in places such as these ... car to car in about 10 hours but we smelt the roses along the way ... |

Epic adventure up a grand line. This has been on the bucket list for a long time. Superb climbing on all pitches. Start very early. The line wanders a lot so 60m ropes helpful. Take two sets of cams to fist size, double set of wires and 10+ slings. Follow instructions above but If you stand a few metres to left of 'Stone wall Jackson' you can see the old rap bolts/ tat on the slab about 8 metres below where the first belay goes.

Lead 2nd, the 3rd (abseil) pitch, a 55m 5th pitch and a final 7th pitch. I climbed off route (the whole way I think, too far right) on the 2nd pitch at perhaps grade 19/20, ending up on the rounded R arete of the buttress.
Route finding on the first and second pitches is pretty tricky, navigating between alternately overhanging and slabby fridge blocks. No idea how the initial jam crack is stylish in any way, or what's so great about the second pitch (but then I wasn't on it). It would save quite a bit of time to skip the 3rd downwards pitch.
I found the hanging belay after the (awkward) abseil to be good enough, I used medium nuts and a low 3 camalot, a .3 or .4 cam would have been handy.
We went fairly directly (maybe 10m left) up from the right end of the wing to the summit, avoiding the gully, this did add another tricky move or two below and through the final overhangs.
We used stacks of gear, from small nuts, nuts, small ball nuts, double cams .1 to 3 and a 4, Mic carried tricams too, 15 draws, and double 60m ropes. The route is in full sun from early morning, and it got pretty hot, we had about 6L of water total. |

Bailed off after the traverse 2nd pitch due to not being comfortable with the anchor situation in the corner. Had 2 nuts and a small cam in place (didn't want to use a number 3 on the loos-ish block) which I was happy with but we were a party of 3 and couldn't get it equalised well enough for my liking. Had imagies of it failing on the next pitch and the 3 of us getting into real trouble. With 2x50m ropes were able to rappel off at this point, just. Traverse pitch to this point is quite fun and safe. Dissapointed not to continue but definitely not ashamed. Will be back for the send!

A particularly awesome second pitch in a brilliant location. A really lovely line, too- it was disappointing not to get to do the famed traverse pitch but with only one confident leader it was not feasible (well, safe) to finish. Would absolutely be worth coming back for, it has a real adventure feel... There was an pre-made anchor! left at the top of the second pitch, and two double rappels got us back to the ground.

The best route in the Bungles for sure! A tricky first 2 pitches, the second pitch being significantly harder than the first but still very managable!
The abseil pitch is kinda difficult to manage, with 2 ledges to choose from, the lower of the 2 makes the best belay! 4rd and 5th pitch are mega classic with great exposure and awesome climbing the while way! We got mildly off route on the 6th pitch, not following the gully and going a bit high! a big block broke off just before I reached the belay while seconding and i took a relatively small but crazy scary fall right onto wills belay! Very glad it held! Being slightly off route meant i led a very scary traverse back into the gully at much higher than grade 13 that the pitch is graded at! Racing the sun will lead the last pitch basically as a solo putting no gear in to save time! Because the pitch was so easy it made it super enjoyable!
If you have a spare day in the Bungles, definately give it a try, as easy bail in possible after the second pitch!

I legitimately don't understand how we managed to bumble our way up this. What a stellar climb!!! First grade 18 trad route and also our 11th day ever trad climbing, four days of which had been a part of this Bungles trip. I got to lead the stunning and difficult second pitch and ridiculously incredible fourth pitch beneath the wing along with a slightly off route sixth pitch and fantastic speed ascent of the last pitch placing no gear so we could both top out before dark. Harry led the rest. Definitely a must do for everyone as even us mere sporty sport climbers got to experience the masterpiece that is Flight of the Phoenix and have an absolute blast. Even had three eagles circling us at one point for the full experience. Get on it!

Mega! Definitely the biggest route I've tried. Jackson led p1,3,4,6 & 8, and I led 2,5 & 7. Routefinding on the first two pitches was a bit funky, 2nd pitch felt pretty sandbagged at 18 but was quite good. The pitch 3 rap was a bit sketchy, we went with the recommendation of using the end of one rope doubled through the rap to support the mediocre belay until the leader had good gear in. Pitches 4 & 5 were long and stellar, great climbing with insane exposure. Pitch 6 was a bit average. We did pitches 7 & 8 after dark, the gully of 7 being pretty manky. All up, a pretty rad day and night out

Climbed the first two pitches and then bailed due to slow climbing (routefinding) and heat. Second pitch felt quite hard, but we may have been off-route.
The easiest way to find the start of the climb is to walk back on the scree until you see the tat on the bolts. This tells you where the first pitch should go. Also, I accidentally pulled off a large block at chest height right next to the start, so it should be pretty obvious. |
