Zoolander Bouldering area is located in Khon Kaen Zoo about 1 hour north of Khon Kaen town. It is a well developed and easily accessible area with many quality sandstone boulders.

Winter, November to February is the prime time for climbing at Zoolander.

access issues

You must buy a ticket to enter Khon Kaen zoo, THB130 for Thai adults and THB350 for foreigners.

approach

Once you enter the zoo, you drive about 3 minutes down the road and you can see the first sector, Central Park on the right.. The climbing areas are signposted by KK Climbing Club and also easily found using the 27 Crags app.

KKCC maintains access to Zoolander bouldering area within the zoo. We all understand that access issues are frequently encountered. We have negotiated with and have a good relationship with the zoo. Please do not undermine our hard work.

Climb safely, respect your surroundings and other zoo guests.

LEAVE NO TRACE

  • Stay on trails

  • Keep the forest trash free. Pack it in, pack it out.

  • Climb on developed boulders following the topo instructions on 27 Crags.

  • The nearest restroom is 500m away. Please do not use the forest as a bathroom.

  • Respect the wildlife.

  • If you come by car please park in designated parking areas only. Do not block traffic.

  • Be considerate of other climbers, observers, zoo visitors and the environment so that we can all have a good time.

  • Free soloing is strictly prohibited.

1.2.1. Central Park 0 routes in Sector

Central park is a large, spread out area with hundreds of problems and potential for a lot more. There are quality lines at every grade.

approach

If you follow the road through the Zoo, you will see a dirt trail on the right after about 3 minutes of driving with signage for Central Park.

1.2.2. Zen Garden 15 routes in Sector

Zen Garden sector is not far from Central Park sector. There are a lot of roof and hard problems in this area, including some of the most classic lines in Khon Kaen.

approach

Park in the Water Park parking lot in Khon Kaen Zoo and follow the old concrete path down until you see a dirt path on the left, follow until you find the main area of Zen Garden.

1.2.3. Power Station North 0 routes in Sector

Power Station is the largest section of Zoolander so far! Khon Kaen Climbing Club has developed a good trail system, cleaned more than 100 boulders and established a lot of lines but there are still so many more boulders to climb! It is a very shady area and slow to dry so please do not climb after rain.

approach

The trail head is at 'Sharp Curve' sign opposite the pump station, at the end of the fence 450m before the Water Park. You can also access from the rear of the area via the bottom of the Zoo accomodation area near the skywalk.

Amper Si Chompu the first sport climbing area of Khon Kaen developed by Khon Kaen Climbing Club (KKCC). It is about 2 hour drive from down town Khon Kaen. There are a lot of tall lime stone mountains in the area and bolting process started in 2016 and still on going. KKCC is trying to set up more routes and put more bolts in.

You will need to drive to the crags. See each sector for more detailed approach.

where to stay

Phu Gradueng village has many guest houses, shops, market, and places to eat. It's about 35 mins drive to the crags.

Chum Phae is the nearest town with hotels, supermarkets, restaurants, etc. It's about 1 hour drive to the crags.

This area start being developed by Matt Foley and Gavriel Jecan 5 years a go, and later on together with Visitor climbers and Khon Kaen climbing club team we manage to add many lines to this area. Now Dong Lan - Si Chompu district has 6 areas and each of it multiple lines.

1.3.1. Shangri La 12 routes in Cliff

This is in the Dong Lan Forest, same mountain with Covert Crag. Stand tall lime stone mountain with white overhang behind the sugarcane / cassava field. You can park at the end of gravel road under a big jackfruit tree. The land owner also made a small access road to allow climbers to drive and park at the base of the wall. High clearance vehicle is recommended though.

*Access to the crag is through a private farm land. Please be respectful.

As of Mar 2021, there are currently 12 routes ranging from 6a - 7a+. Most of the routes are long, upto 34 meter. 70 meter rope is required.

Access by the same dirt road to ‘Covert Crag’. Once you turn left into the road heading to the mountains, instead of turn left at the next intersection, go straight to the white Access by the same dirt road to ‘Covert Crag’. Once you turn left into the road heading to the mountains, instead of turn left at the next intersection, go straight to the white wall on the right hand side of the mountain. The road condition is not always good, so may be park at the intersection and hike in. Will take like 15 min hike. Coordinate is 16°49'35.7"N 102°01'56.9"E.

Amper Si Chompu the first sport climbing area of Khon Kaen developed by Khon Kaen Climbing Club (KKCC). It is about 2 hour drive from down town Khon Kaen. 70 meters rope is RECOMMENDED for most of the crag in Khon Kaen. We bolted long routes. Some of the routes need to be rappel from the bolted anchor.

In January the sun hits the crag at around 4pm, so it's cool in the shade for most of the day.

approach

Google 'Si Chomphu District, Khon Kaen'. On highway 201, it's on the opposite site of the road passed Phu Pha Man National Park.

As of Mar 2021, there are 4 main crags in Si Chompu area.

  1. Covert crag

  2. Shangrila

  3. Boneyard crag (located in Pha Nam Thiang temple)

  4. Pha Noi

The attractions near by include Wat Tham Saeng Tham and Wat Thum Pha Nam Thiang. Wat = temple in Thai language.

Camping is available at an organic farm near Pha Nam Thiang temple, about 5 min drive to Boneyard wall.

There is no public transportation in this rural area. You will need to drive.

Not far from Covert Crag and Shangrila wall. In Thai, Pha = cliff and Noi = little. So it's a nice little wall that is only 1 min walk from the parking sport, white smooth limestone, and the right side is in the shade all day long. Bolting is still in going on. The routes are about 19-20 meter height. As in Feb 2021, there are 3 routes bolted by Khon Kaen Clmbing Club (KKCC). Grade range from 5 to 7a+ (French grade) It's next to the planation field and a local road, so there will be local people working or riding motorcycles near by. Be restpectful and keep your noise minimum. Thailand Mountain Sport Club (TMSC) donated 100 of SS316 bolts to KKCC to make the development possible.

t's not far from Ban Sam Champa School. From the school, drive south till you meet Ban Sam Champa Child Development Center (Kinder garden school). Then turn right to the dirt road and you will see the wall at the curve in front of you. Parking along side of the road. We have cleared space for 2 vehicles only. Please don't block the road as there will be agricultural truck passing by often.

North wall orientation, Shade all day, access through the buddhist temple, please let the head monk know when you are at the wall, ( walk through the temple to a new wood stair case, climb the stairs up three quarters of the way, at this point you'll see a trail to the right, take the primitive trail and keep right at the fork, then you'll see the wall to the right. It takes around 10 min walk from the car.

Search for What Tham Pha Chor in Google Map and it will take you close to the Window Wall. The access too the crag is behind the temple. Walk up the wooden steps and take the basic trail to the right and keep right to the fork and you'll see the wall on the right side.

Pho Pa Man and Phokradung has few resorts, and Chump city has many accommodation and it is 30 min drive from the crag.

Please when climbing at this area , verbally register with the head monk at the bottom of the cliff at the Buddhist temple.

This is the Lower wall of the Window group, From the Woden stars the wall is to the right.

Search for What Tham Pha Chor in Google Map and it will take you close to the Window Wall. The access too the crag is behind the temple. Walk up the wooden steps and take the basic trail to the right and keep right to the fork and you'll see the wall on the right side. It is the wall to the right wooden steps that lead to the Window wall, short trail to the right, the wall is in the shade in the morning and then in the afternoon, in the sun from 11 AM to 2PM
