Ascents in Intersection Rock having Beta

A kinda trickier start, but gives way to some wonderfully frictiony stemming. Good gear throughout. Topped out by going through the tiny cave at the top, pretty interesting manoeuvres. Not too hard, lot of fun.

Due to time constraints, I chose to start up West Chimney, then stepped left into the flake proper. The slab moves at the top keeps your head in the game!

Three goes.Dogged then clean on top rope then redpoint. The most obvious line in all of JT. Had to be done

My 2nd trad lead, extremely enjoyable pitch with good protection.

Really proud to have TR-flashed this one. Some hard moves around the bolt!

Our first route in JT! A good introduction

The first few metres is the best part. The rest of it was also excellent

Nice, but the beginning is an off width crack, super hard and very frightening in lead for sure.

First trad route for me

First route in Joshua Tree and the US in general. Trad with a bolted anchor.

Maybe a bit too hard for the second trad route, but we got to the top (actually even without falling or resting on the rope). Starts with a chimney and an offwidth crack, where protections can only be placed relatively far apart if you don't have cams above size 3. After that, there is the flake after which the route was named and it gets easier. Finishes with a relatively easy slab with two bolts which are about 5 meters apart. Anchor is on the other side of the rock.

Made me question everything in life. Jeez, this was well and truly beyond my capabilities.

Led 1st pitch

Felt hard for the grade, making progress though.

Led the first pitch and seconded the overhand which was burly as.

Onsight rope solo. Second pitch felt exposed coming around the hand traverse, awesome climb

Great, varied trad climb with a slab finish that I found to be the (mental) crux.

A brilliant pitch for the grade. Very long and varied the whole way with interesting moves from the chimney all the way to the slab. A good one.

A wonderful way to spend an evening. We watched the sunset on top with a few beers. Sublime.

So proud of this one.

Direct (right) start. Great hand jams, but slightly greasy with very limited feet for the first couple moves. Protected with a #.75.

Screwed up the sequence at the top of the chimney, didn't switch from feet right to feet left at the right time. Sat on a #5. Extremely pleasant climbing thereafter.

So pumpy at the bottom and then glory to the top.

led p1 via direct start

Direct start seemed really hard, so started from the left of the crack, then up the crack itself. Protects reasonably well, though a bit run-out at the top.

Got the starting moves, and one piece in -- but then couldn't figure out how to proceed. Cleared gear and down-climbed off.

Didn't take a big cam so had to run it out a bit on P2 but fun, secure climbing and a nice sunset.

Apparently we both did the lower chimney/offwidth section facing the wrong way which made it much harder. I had to pull on a sling to get through this section. The rest of pitch 1 and the slabby pitch 2 were good.
