summary

Wide Variety, Fun Boulders, Low Key

description

Just south of the Garrett Stone Tower down a wide trail are a couple of outcrops. A few short problems about 8-10 feet on the right side of the trail Rocky Hollow.. Also a few feet from the tower West is another outcrop with problems on it, The Flakes. Several problems near the entrance, worth the walk, Entrance Boulders.

access issues

You might be chased out of the Flakes as it is visible from a police training center. But Rocky Hollow and The Entrance Boulders have no issues to date. The park is a multi use area so be nice to fellow park users.

approach

GSP to exit 153B then take Rt.3 West to Rt.46 West and take the Little Notch exit North a few miles reaching the park on the right side of the road. Proceed into the park for 0.6 mile and park at a pullout just across from the stone tower on he right.

Once at the Reservation for Rocky Hollow and the Flakes park at the Tower. For the Flakes walk past the tower and down the trail to the left. For Rocky Hollow walk away from the tower staying on the trail to the right.

For the Entrance Boulders, park as close to the entrance as possible, walk towards the park entrance they will be in the woods near Weasel Drift Road.

where to stay

No camping allowed, climbing is great for a day trip, getting there early is key as parking can become an issue.

ethic

Keep a low profile, be friendly to hikers and bird watchers, pack out any trash and don't freak out if people start watching.

history

Climbing History varies at Garret. The Flakes have been well established for years, but have been forgotten by local climbers as well as park staff as overgrowth and low maintenance are evident.

Recently climbers have taken to developing the Rocky Hollow Boulders and the Entrance Boulders. Some projecting has been done else where on the Reservation but is still ongoing.

The Flakes boulders range from V0 up to V8, there is an unfinished problem with possibility of being perhaps V10/V10+.

Rocky Hollow is a large loop of bouldering face. The climbs range from V0 to V5. The classics in the area are High Roller, Big Wu and Don't Wanna Be All By Myself.

The Entrance Boulders have several roof problems, great warm up slab and an awkwardly smooth boulder. Problems range from V0-V5, as of now. The classics are Battle of the Bulge, Chunk!, No Captain Chunk! and The Inferno.
