A cluster of boulders scattered around the Pūkaki River bed.
The diversion of Lake Pūkaki outflows into the nearby canal means there is now a dry riverbed where the Pūkaki River once flowed. A few of the boulders that have resurfaced in the riverbed are tall enough to offer some engaging problems.
Pūkaki spillway occasionally discharges into the Pūkaki River when the lake levels are high. It would not be practical to access the boulders when this happens. More information on Pūkaki River flows here: https://www.meridianenergy.co.nz/power-stations/lake-levels#pukaki
There is a car park off NZ State Highway 8 just before getting onto the dam. It’s only a 5-10 min walk down to the Black Beard Boulder from the highway. Provided the road is open, it's also possible to drive your vehicle down the 4x4 track that follows the river (good clearance recommended).
Use common sense.
