The Hochalmspitze (3,360 metres above the Adriatic (11,020 ft)) is located east of Mallnitz in the Austrian state of Carinthia. It is sometimes called "Tauern Queen" (German: Tauernkönigin) as a counterpart to the "Tauern King", the Grossglockner.

approach

From the Gößkarspeicher (1707m) via the forest road or cut-off to the Gießener Hütte (2215m). Continue via the Rudolstädter Steig, which leads to the Steinernen Mandln. At an altitude of about 2800 meters you leave the path and continue to climb pathlessly in the direction of the south pillar. Via the "Trippkees" you reach the foot of the south pillar.

Glacier equipment required.

Descent via Dettmolder Grat or Steinerne Mandl back to the Gießener Hütte possible.

The Maltatal is one of Southern Austria's gems and probably one of the better granite climbing areas in the Eastern Alps. Maltatal is a beautiful small alpine valley with sport climbs and bouldering.

approach

Make your way to Gmünd in Carinthia, located along the A12, the highway connecting Salzburg to Villach. From there follow the obvious signs into the Maltatal. Most climbing is located a few kilometers after the village of Malta and higher up near the famous Kölnbreinsperre (the huge dam).

where to stay

Camp, rent a room or stay further out near lake Millstatt (Millstättersee) for a more relaxed holiday.

From Camping Zechner, by bike, it's 9km and 100m elevation gain and nearly 30 minutes. Most of the time, you can cycle on a car-free way next to river Malta and fields.

1. Zustiegsmöglichkeit: Vom Ortsgebiet von Kolbnitz (Westlicher Bereich) über markierten Wanderweg in Richtung Kirche am Danielsberg - Ca. auf halber Höhe links (südlich) auf schwach ausgeprägtem Steig zum Klettergiet

2. Zustieg. Vom Parkplatz bei der Kirche am Danielsberg in Richtung Osten bei der Kirche vorbei zu Wanderweg in Richtung Kolbnitz. Nach einem einzel stehenden Gehöft noch ca. 100 Meter weiter und dann auf schwach ausgeprägtem Steig in Richtung Süden zum Klettergebiet

(Beide Zustiegsmöglichkeiten ca. 20 Minuten

head to the skiing area of Mölltaler Gletscher. Use one of the 1050(!) available parking lots. Walk over to the crag.

let your satnav guide you to Kaponig 14, 9821 Kaponig (OSM and google do know this adress); it's about 4km from the center of Obervellach up the mountain

car:

follow the B105 heading to Mallnitz, after a few hundred meters - after passing the powerhouse's pipes - turn right; follow the road for about 2km, in the 10th curve (hairpin) there is a parking lot for the crag (46.94261, 13.2022)

walk 100m over to the crag, you should already see it from there
