Aid route from the late 60s or so, next to "Falkendach". Climbed each passage freely, but had to sit a few times to clarify that the protection was good and also to dust off some of the holds. Brittle in the beginning, lots of pitons in good condition (the first one is even glued in) and a few possible placements for nuts and cams. It's not too bad when climbed freely, but the meandering line, the vegetation and the rock quality in some parts make it clear why this has never been revived.

Finally got this one, after five years of sneaking past it. Giving it a good brush after the Alzheimer's flash attempt certainly helped, as well as refreshing my memory of the beta. Cruxy moves where you leave the diagonal flake, quite reachy or dynamic. My wingspan was just enough to do it statically. The middle part is a game of "keep it together", before the finish awaits with some more trickery and an anchor that just had to be set so far up left that you're starting to get nervous on the last meter. Great route.

One of my absolute favourites. This time, I got attacked by angry ants in the middle of the dihedral, though. They were swarming all over a thorny bush that grew there, which I brushed with my face a little, which again coaxed them into jumping onto my face and spraying their venom into my eyes. Nasty little buggers. I removed the bush afterwards. Another note: a green dragon cam is perfect to protect the section below the roof (better than the rusty peg). You should leave out the bolt in the chimney to avoid massive rope drag, or take a long-ass sling to extend it.

Nice route that loosely follows an old, forgotten aid route ("Bergseite", first described in Bühler guide from 1973) but then merges into "Südriss" towards the top instead of going directly left into the chossy overhang. Good rock and nice moves.

Gnarly boulder that requires a lot of finger strength (or tricks that I couldn't pull off). Getting to the first bolt is exciting, but there are jugs. Pulling up into the slab is probably easiest on the right, via some brittle but big holds, and a massive hook. Clipping the second bolt might be the hardest part, it's easier if the draw is already in. From there, I slapped up left to a shallow pocket while crimping hard with the right hand on a shallow slanted edge (high left foot, too). The top is like "Südostkante", which still offers possibilities to drop off despite the much lower grade.

7 Direkte Talseite - with mantra Sport 25m Good

Athletic, strenuous overhang. The holds are a little brittle, clipping is also not too easy. The reward is the upper wall, which I already knew.

Finally buckled up to try this, and I can confirm that it's not 8, but 7. Great crack climbing and a good route to level-up your trad skills. Careful with the first placement, though, the crack is quite smooth at the beginning and some brands of cams might slip out. The original line apparently stepped onto the arête at the end (hence the name) and drew up to the left (a peg is still there), which is then the crux of the whole route. However, there's an anchor a little to the right now, too.

Yet another brilliant piece of rock at this wall. The intimidating crack dihedral in the beginning is easier than it looks, the actual difficulty starts when you traverse out to the right into the wall filled with slopers. Barely made it through that passage, sweat dripping off of my brow. The overhanging finish is actually easy (even though it says "very hard" in the old guidebooks; funny old codgers) and great fun.

It's nowadays probably better to start via "Reine Nervensache", but the start actually isn't too bad, just be careful what you hold on to. When you've reached the little alcove with the tiny tree, the real fun starts. Tricky to say the least, but also powerful in places. Climbed to the anchor of "Reine Nervensache" instead of going right to the anchor of "Hohe Liebe".

Great line, neglected classic. The traverse below the roof is probably what puts most people off, no easy toproping possible. Neither polished nor exceedingly chossy. Best lower off the last bolt, the last few meters are overgrown and there's no anchor. Concerning the route: it's a fun, easy traverse and good layback and crack climbing.

Now I could take advantage of my own cleaning operation in March. Surprisingly easy traverse without a thick layer of dust on each hold and dirt on each foothold. I'm still puzzled about the last step up to the belay, though. The second pitch is so nice, it's just a shame that it's so short. #lastrouteoftheday

Climbed the first pitch lead solo while waiting for my climbing partner, cleaning the holds on the fly. Actually nice climbing in the traverse. Lead the second pitch normally, then. Good crack dihedral at the start, then the rock gets brittle, unfortunately (and there are no more bolts, so take some gear). With a few more ascents per year, this could become much better (again, I'm sure it was climbed quite often ages ago).

8- Andreas-Link-Anstieg - with Harald Sport 15m, 7 Average
Christoph Rauch
Probably way harder than 8- by now, and this isn't even the final form. Quite chossy, and the extremely powerful moves don't exactly invite you to treat the holds with care. Once you're in the slab above the initial steep part, it gets easier, but still tricky around the bolt after the rusty ring.

Disclaimer: the rating is only valid for masochists. Traverses through the whole crag. It's already a bit sketchy to the first bolt, but the real treat awaits on the way to the second. I basically kneeled on the sandy, sloping ledge with my left leg while selecting the most solid footholds on the right. The second bolt is at least 5 to 6 meters away from the first, so falling there would get you very close to the ground in a big swing, scrubbing against the brittle rock. From the second bolt on, the rock quality improves drastically, also due to the fact that the traverse crosses the sport climbing routes, so the middle section is really fun and reminded me a bit of "Die Gelbe". Set up belay at the original belay bolt before the merger into "Karl Diener Gedenkweg" because it would have been a close call in one pitch with a 50 m rope. The second pitch is then quite short, but still enjoyable despite the rock getting dirtier again.

Started via "Weg für Verklemmte", which joins the original line quite soon (at least there are rusty old pegs next to the glue-ins). Had to set up belay on the small ledge below the roof because I didn't have any draws left. Easy traverse around the corner, leaving WFV, then up on the right via the crack. Had to struggle quite a bit with that one. Some of the holds also crumbled beneath my hands, because it's not climbed often. Quite dusty all in all.

Good line along the crack dihedral with nice laybacking. A bigger block at the end of the crack is brittle, but fortunately there's a nice, thin, but solid sidepull to the left of it. Finished via the right-hand exit, which is supposed to be the easier variant, but quite tough for the grade; a few balancy slab moves to the jug, then through the greenery to the summit.

Dusty, brittle hell of a route. Would be really good otherwise, but it's hard to recommend it like that. Thankfully, there were already some draws/extensions in the first two bolts, with the first one clipped. That softens the hardest parts a bit. For what its worth, some of the jams were really fun!

Still a little damp, so I had to climb really carefully. First bolt is hard to reach. Didn't feel too easy, didn't find any good jams in the crack. After the second bolt, the vegetation takes the upper hand, unfortunately, so I cannot really recommend this one.

6+ Emilienriss, Originalweg - with Daniel Sport 35m Don't Bother
Christoph Rauch
(The rating is just for the original start, the crack itself is really good, if you're up for some alpine adventure.) After the little groove, you're supposed to go left just below the crack; I tried that but turned around because of the choss and lack of protection, then traversed left two meters lower. The traverse into the track turned out to be a nightmarish game of peeling off prospective holds, then brushing off grime from the remaining mediocre crimps. Technically, this is probably indeed around 6+, maybe 7-, but you'd need to work the wall with a pressure cleaner before. The upper part went well, though, but the thorn bush above the last bolt is back. Since we didn't have a long enough rope anyway, I stopped there.

Most comments and guidebooks claim the crux to be a problem of reach. Could be that they overlooked my beta, or just didn't bother, but I used a nice thumb catch undercling to get my left hand up onto a tiny crimp. Right foot onto a good hold and a dynamic bump to the jug. I'm rather average in height, so myth debunked. Maybe at the upper end of 8+ like that, but still in the range.

Astonishingly good holds and quite solid rock. Great, sensible traverse along the obvious crimps, even with a little bit of downclimbing. Crux at the beginning of the traverse. There's an anchor on the ledge just above the wall, best to crawl over to that one in case you don't have anyone to second the route. In comparison to the other routes here rather 7 than 7+.

Climbed every passage freely, but rested at every bolt to clean the holds. Also, didn't really anchor the rope at the bottom, using a lead solo device, since it's a long traverse. Instead I tried something a bit awkward, because each bolt is trustworthy on its own: I tied in in the middle of the rope, then anchored off at each bolt with a bit of slack, cleaned the holds and footholds to the next bolt on rope tension, then climbed the passage freely, anchored off at the next bolt with the other strand of rope and finally went back on rope tension to retrieve the gear from the previous bolt. A lot of effort, but I didn't want to do the whole route twice to retrieve the gear. The vertical passage after the book case is the most interesting (and the least chossy) part, with one challenging section before the sling, then jugs to the top. But the crux seemed to me to be to get to the book case in the first place.

Nice little traverse in the middle. Climbed the crack much more elegantly this time, with fist jams instead of laybacking it. Great direct finish. Well … actually, since it's a direct start combined with a direct finish considering the original line, it's a completely different route. Anyway, the first meter after the split from "Hohe Liebe" is quite crumbly, but after that it's perfect rock. The runout after the second bolt in the overhang is unproblematic because you're actually climbing along the huge flakes in the line of "Hohe Liebe", then go back to the right for 5 meters of overhanging, delicate climbing with lots of hidden holds that can cost you the onsight.

8+ Burkis Tanz auf der luftigen Wampe - with Markus Benning Sport 28m, 11

Oh bugger. Crux right at the end, after what I first believed to be the anchor because I didn't see any holds above the roof. Splits off from "Reine Nervensache" after about 20 meters or so into a no-hands rest on the left, which you should use, because you need the strength on the last few meters. Bold balance moves a meter above the bolt (I luckily had a knotted sling on my harness which I placed in a crack and which fit perfectly, so my pulse went down a bit again ) lead to a fantastic two-finger pocket. You then clip the last bolt from a huge undercling below the roof, but that's where the journey ended for me. Couldn't figure out how to get over the roof (at least not while the holds above it were slimy from wet lichen … probably hasn't been done in a while). Got to check this out some time.

For something that was originally practised on top rope before even putting bolts in, the protection seems quite bad. However, if you take a dragon cam 0 (or two to be sure; a mediocre number 1 is also possible), you can protect the runout to the third bolt and not risk a ground fall. Still, it's better if there's a longer draw in the bolt already. The actual crux is then to get past that bolt. Here, it's understandable that the next bolt is again far away, because you don't have a chance to clip anyway. Falling should also be fine, you won't crash into the slab. The rest is easier on sloping pockets. I removed the thorn bush below the anchor today.

Impressive classic from 1927 that finds the easiest way through the face. Don't be fooled, though, it's by all means not easy. Tricky already to the first bolt, then a tough balance traverse to the little arête. Of course, the arête was a bit wet today, which didn't really help. Up the little dihedral via a rusty peg to a good undercling flake where I placed a cam before stepping over via wet footholds to the next bolt. The rest was dry again, but another challenge awaited in the form of a thornbush (we cut it off afterwards, though). A nice and solid dihedral finishes up the climb ( the final overhang is easy, but there's no bolt afterwards).

The upper part is really enjoyable. Great layback crack followed by a nice crack dihedral with interesting rock structures. Big runouts there, but quite easy (6- max). As for the lower half … well, I liked it, but the rock is really brittle. Please pull gently on the massive flake which makes up the first ten meters. Crux is to get over the second bulge after the flake. Easier on the right, directly over the old peg (the new glue-in bolt actually belongs to the new hard route "Airwaves"). Remember to extend the last few bolts in the lower part, especially the last, or you'll have to fight with rope drag at the top.
