Ascents in New Zealand by Hugh

This route was amazing! Really engaging, and even though it's safely bolted, it felt like it took all my composure to get through it. It never relents, and has a bit of everything. Thin moves at the start, balancey and tenuous footwork, a fun traverse with underclings, and lovely crack and lay-backing at the top with a mantle to make you think before the chains.

Great route, awesome moves for the grade. The 3rd pitch is super strange and unlike anything I've done before, but was a blast!

This climb was fun! Big moves, different holds compared to a lot of other Wanaka climbs.

Footwork on this a real challenge. Everything (and nothing) looked like a foothold.

Challenging start with a lot of polished holds. Nice layback feature just before the anchors.

I loved this climb. Nice and steep for the grade on big holds and engaging the whole way. Keeps you interested the moment you step off the deck.

Nice moves on this. Still a little wet at this stage of the season.

Lots of vegetation and ledges. Nice climbing in the last couple of metres before the anchors.

The guide says that this climb is on "excellent black rock", but I found it to be fairly friable and chossy. Could do with a clean, but despite this still has amazing slab moves, and is sustained and thought provoking the entire way. Awesome climb, despite the occasional exploding foot hold.

Great moves through the corner and then up over the bulge. Good rock!

Good slab moves in the lower half. Take a few extenders to reduce drag on the first pitch.

Good slab moves at the grade. A fist sized block came out from the rock to the left of the anchors so be careful in that darker rock.

A bit mossy in the bottom section. Cleaned up nicely in the top half.

Nice climbing. Mossy in spots.

Hard black rock with some great smear moves in the lower half. Some of the bolts aren't visible until you're right on top of them, so it looks run out in spots from the ground but it's well bolted. Gets steeper as you get higher. Great climbing.

Damn this climb is SICK! Best climb at the grade I've done. Has everything, the chimney at the start, the move around onto the arete, the slight overhang, then the slabby climbs up to the chains. A must do for anyone visiting the area. The 4th or 5th bolt changes sides in the chimney and isn't visible from the bottom.

Technical start but great sustained climbing the whole way up. Has beautiful thin moves, a nice undercling half way up, and is well bolted.

Fun little bulge and then nice moves all the way to the top. Some lichen towards the top also.

Super fun slab moves. First couple of moves off the ground are hard for the grade but are a nice little puzzle. Great little climb.

Suprisingly nice climbing at the grade.
