The Land of the Giants is situated in the Tirolen Ötztal valley. The blocks were once part of a mountain, until a massive landslide washed them down the valley and onto the other side, including Niederthai. Slowly, the river carved its way through the rubble, and eventually people settled on the valley floor. In 2012, Toby Saxton and Manu Ladner discovered the bouldering potential within the forest around Winklen. After finding many different sectors, they set to work, cleaning and climbing and having fun.

PARKING & ACCESS Up until now, the locals have been very understanding and have allowed us to park near the quarry just below the walking trail. But we need to consider that this is a residential area and a working stone quarry. If the parking is full, don’t squeeze in, there are other, larger carparks: one down by the river, the other on the way to the Winklenbergsee, neither one is far from the boulders. Alternatively, just before you get up to the stone works turn left, head slightly down the hill on the left. Past the houses is a large gravel area where it is possible to park, and is only one minute further to walk. To enter the bouldering area. walk up behind the stone works, and up into the forest entering where there is a swinging seat and a geology table. This is a great place to take a short break and soak up some knowledge of the rocks we climb on. From hear, head left on the walking trail for approximately 120m until you see an alpine marmot on the right hand side. From here, head up hill trending left in front of the larger boulder, then join the trail to the first blocks. Please stick to the trails to conserve the beautiful forest vegetation.

Welcome to the Land of the Giants! This is the part where I bitch and moan, so please bear with me. Having had the pleasure of this magical forest pretty much to ourselves for almost 5 years, it’s time to unveil it to the world. This area is still work in progress, with new sectors being discovered and new lines going up almost every week. But the forest is there for every one, not just the climbers. WASTE MANAGEMENT Please take all rubbish out of the forest, even if it’s not yours! Don’t just take rubbish down to your car and leave it there. This includes cigarette stubs! If you do get caught short or just like to ‘answer the call of nature’ in the forest, find a place to do your business well away from the climbing blocks, and dig a hole. Put your toilet paper in a hole or burn it, I don’t care, just don’t leave it sitting on top of the nice green moss. LOUD NOISE Please respect that this is a community area, with many people using the forest, not just climbers. Please keep noise to a minimum; not everyone wants to have loud music disturbing the peace and tranquility of the forest. The same can be said for shouting of war cries to the success or failure of every boulder. But, saying all this, the forest is amazing and we want you to enjoy your time in this magical place.
