El estado de Chiapas se encuentra en el suroeste de México. Es el hogar de ocho diferentes grupos étnicos, la marimba, el café, el pozol, las paredes enormes del Cañón del Sumidero y de los Zapatistas. Es un lugar mágico, poco explorado y con gran diversidad. Desde la costa pacífica, atravesando los altos de San Cristóbal de las Casas hasta la selva lacandona se encuentra un enorme potencial para practicar la escalada en roca. Cuevas, arcos, simas, cañones y rocas por todos los lados. Todavía muy virgen, aunque totalmente comparable con otros lugares conocidos en México y más allá.

Uno podría pensar, que la escalada en Chiapas esta apenas comenzando, pero eso no es cierto. Aquí se escala desde miles de años. Los Zoques fueron los primeros escaladores de la región. Se han encontrado pinturas rupestres en cuevas en una altura de más de cien metros, en paredes verticales y desplomados, donde la única manera de llegar es, escalando. Incluso se han hallado restos de cuerdas, que eran hechas de plantas regionales. Según usaban las cuevas para sus ceremonias y rituales, pero solo podemos suponer, porque y como subieron esas paredes. Sin embargo, si uno sube en sus rutas, se da cuenta directamente, que los Zoques tenían un nivel muy avanzado en la escalada en roca.

Hoy día la escalada se reparte en dos zonas principales, a las afueras de la capital del estado Tuxtla Gutierrez y alrededor del pueblo mágico de San Cristóbal de las Casas. Ambos lugares ofrecen una gran variedad de rutas deportivas y tradicionales, boulders y multilargos.

Same beginning like "Panditas a mi". On the second bolt climb to the right. Extend second quickdraw.

Great climb through the entire face.

Nice Ridge at the end.

Very beautyful line through the central pillar of the wall. Jugs in the beginning, crimps at the end.

A little traverse in the middle of the route leads to a juggy roof finish.

Continuation of the route Chiapanese Cheese. Consider using a few long draws to avoid rope drag.

Hard boulder, tricky exit.

The orignial way to climb this route is taking the stalactite and climb right up from it (5.11c). You can also avoid this crux by clipping just the long sling instead of the bolt and climb in between the little tree and the stalactite (5.11b). Further to the left is even easier but a little runout.

Very nice and exposed extension of "El Chaman".

Brutal moves through the roof.

The route combines the crux of "Ek Balam" and the hard exit of "Reina del Sur" with some powerful moves in between. This variation is slightly harder than the original exit of "Ek Balam".

Really cool boulder through the roof and awesome face climb at the end. One of the best routes in San Cristóbal.

Start at "Lado Blanco", on the 4th bolt to the right.

Easy extension of "Búfalo blanco".

Slab in the beginning, crux in the belly and tricky finish. Nice long route. You can retreat at the anquors of "Búfalo blanco", this reduces the route´s grade to 5.11b.

Beautiful limestone arch with amazing routes and tufas. Mostly steep climbing with roof sections, often above the small river running through the cave.

These routes are at the base of the arch on the left side. Without crossing the river.

The first line on the left side of the cave. Shares first bolt with Chamula Yodler and passes 2 small roofs.

A little extension of Gollum. The anchors were set by speleologics years ago.

Extension of El Puerco Valiente. Long endurance route with bouldery ending.

Shares 1st bolt with Gollum and then trends right through 3 small roofs with great rests.

Extension of Chamula Yodler. Spectacular moves in the big roof. First 5.13 of Chiapas.

Link up of the two most spectacular climbs in Arcotete. After the first crux of "Helldorado" turn left into "La Historia sin Fin". Extend and/or skip a large number of quickdraws to avoid rope drag.

Nice moves through the first roof followed by a little boulder.

Extension of El Dorado. Sequence of hard long moves through the big roof.

Start on El Dorado then at the 5th bolt traverse right to an easy clip then continue straight up steep headwall.

From the second to last bolt: follow holds up + slightly right (if you find yourself traversing to the left you may as well just climb El Dorado).

Goes through the center of the first roof to the big white tufa and ends before the big roof starts.

Extension of Intenevris. Extend quickdraws to avoid rope drag.

The longest route in the arch. An absolute journey in the vertical and horizontal. This route is the combination of Intenevris, "La Serpiente Cósmica" and Helldorado. Extend quickdraws to avoid rope drag.

Start on Intenevris. On the penultimate bolt climb right and through the roof till you reach the chains of "El Tótem". Please be carfull with the fragile stalactites.

Start on “La casa del murciélago mutante” but at bolt 7 climb left and onto the anchors of "El Tótem".

The easiest way through the first roof.

The direct start to the route "Jade".

Start at "La Torre de Mordor" and keep climbing to the balcony on the other side of the arch. Belay from there to clean the route.

The route starts at the very end of the little beach next to the water with the standing stalactite column. Big jugs all the way up. Protected with bolts and slings. A candidate for downclimbing.

This is the big ledge inside of the arch. Access it by climbing up at the base of "La Torre de Mordor".

The route starts on the big ledge (repisa) inside the arch. Bouldery start, nice finish. Crawl through the small cave behind the anchors to get to the balcony and get back dry.

Start at the end of the Big Ledge. Goes all the way up, right next to the balcony. To escape dry, climb left from the anchors into the balcony.

Shares the first bolt with "El Paso del Murciélago". Beautiful pinches lead you to a big ledge. To escape dry you can walk left on the ledge into a big room. From there you can crawl through a small cave to the balcony and walk back.

The route starts on the big ledge in the middle of the arch. It shares the first bolt with the route "La Llorona" and then goes to the right. To escape dry, escape like in "la Llorona".

These routes start on the right side of the other side of the arch, next to the dam. Only accessible from December to June.

These routes are on the other side of the river. To get there go downstream and use the bridge to cross. The first routes are next to the river, other ones a bit uphill.

Climb the route "El Totem" and continue through the roof until you connect to "La Historia sin fin" and all the way up. In the middle part you can protect with slings. Rope drag!

Starts just right of "El Tótem". To avoid a runout at the end, take a sling with you and protect around a big stalactite.

Slabby Start to technical moves on broken sidepulls and ledges. A bit run out with easy climbing to the anchor.

Shares first bolt with "Stoamandl" and passes left of the nice long tufa. Slabby start to tufa jug hauling.

Right of nice long tufa. Sahres 1st bolt with "Cri Cri". Slabby Start to nice climbing along the tufa. The upper section is grey rock with runnels and huge sand watches.

A nice alternative to the steep and sometimes crowded main sector. Technical face climbing.

This route has 2 variations.

#1 Stand Start: Short bouldery (V3) start from left hand pinch and right hand crimp (small people have to jump to it), then easier 5.10c climbing to the anchors = 5.11b/c

#2 Sit Start: Starts on the horn, hard boulder (V7/8) through the roof and over the lip, then easier 5.10c climbing to the anchors = 5.12d hard

Bloques y paredes en los bosques y cerros en el este de San Cristóbal de las Casas. El tipo de roca es caliza con agarres pequeños y partes muy filosas. Se pueden ver numerosas impresiones de fósiles.

Ese bloque se encuentra justo en el corte de fuego, no en el bosque.

Comienza con mano derecha en mono dedo y mano izquierda en regleta. Primero arriba y hasta una pinza con mano derecha y luego entrar en "El Aprendiz de Mago" y terminarlo hasta arriba. (Top out)

Comienza sentado como "Mono Dedo", envés de escalar hacia la izquierda va un poco a la derecha y llega a un canto grande con los dos manos.

Comienzo en el mismo agarre de "Lanzelot", luego traversia larga hacia la izquierda. Agarres pequeños hasta entrar en "El Aprendiz de Mago" y terminarlo. (Top out)

Primer bulder de la zona. Comienza sentado, va primero en el filo y despues hacia la derecha a buenos agarres, hasta llegar a un cactus. De allí brincar o destrepar.

Comienza con mano derecha en semidedo, mano izquierda en el canto. Siguen regletas muy pequeños para llegar a una laja grande y esa arriba hasta canto grande.

Comienzo como "Los tres espadachines 1". El filo para arriba.

Comienza como "Huitzilopochtli Sit Start", escalar un poco hacia la izquierda, pero envés de terminarlo, escalar diagonal directo hacia la laja grande. Final como "Mazo de Puas". (Top out)
