Hadn't done many face trad climbs so was a bit anxious. Don't find any secure nut placement til to the upper section. My gear was a bit spaced at the bottom, a few shallow nut placements that I thought just wouldn't hold so skipped em? Would love to test them in a safe way. Glad I had cams. Don't get on it 19 is your max. A a fantastic experience 😀

Decided i really wanted to use that #6 i got and haven't been used yet so, so why not jump on my first offwidth. After watching so many wide Boyz videos what could possibly go wrong? Oh boy what little did I know. Turns out trying to jam your feet in that sleek crack while bumping the #6 for something that feel like eternity was harder that I thought. The chimney was fun and cruisy.

My oesophagus was full of biscuits, belly full of gas. A gale was blowing, stoke was low. Climbed a 10. still got a bit spooked on the top section. maybe it was just the biscuit oesophagus but it felt more like a 15 for that section. you can basically bump a purple #5 the whole way. or get your 6 stuck at various locations throughout the climb as i did.

climbed to the mantle to find the gear. found some small crumbly pockets. placed a pretty good blue totem in one and traversed over to find the jugs and gear wasnt as promising as i hoped and downclimbed and bailed. Old Mate Delaney then sent it but tested that blue totem in the pocket and ended up crumbling the cam right out. so im glad i didnt trust it. beware of the rock in that first section. or just dont fall i guess.

Gave the new Credos a trial trying to kneelock the offwidth. Pretty polished inside that thing though, it was too thin for a heel-toe and my outside foot slipped a couple of times. Also made the mistake of facing left for the final chimney which made for painful kneebars on the knobbly surface and also an awkward twist to get out.
Gear: 1x6, 2x1-4s, singles .4-.75; an extra 6 would have been nice to save bumping. There's normal size gear after the first section. |

Especially when there's 3 or 4 Carrots on the route itself. Made a 5 piece anchor at the top in the choss cave to clean. So much unnecessary faff. Would recommend the route to anyone

Seemed hard for 10 in my current condition... though trying to climb it technically probably didn’t help... First time trying actual climbing shoes in a very long time, approach shoes would have been better ...
Felt like 15 but would only have been 12 in approach shoes... definitely felt less than 10 last time I soloed it ...

Despite bailing off of Auntie Jack onto this, it was actually a pretty great route. You need minimal gear for it in reality. The crux is figuring out what to use as an anchor to bring your second up.
|
|||||||
19 | ★★★ Auntie Jack - with Bridie Campbell | 27m, 1 | |||||
Today didn't feel like the day for this. I got the carrot clipped and then really struggled at my height to place the next nut without risking a terrible ground fall. Luckily the bail onto the route next door turned out to be great. Zipper was awesome but needs an anchor. I'm just going to come out and say it, Aunty Jack needs an anchor too. The tree everyone used to use has been torched and is unreliable now and the pockets in choss are shit if you actually think your second might struggle or God forbid, you have to haul them... Other than that, this is probably a fine route.

Fantastic route, but a bold lead in my opinion. The gear is great overall, but a bit spaced in the first third. I placed a 1/2 micro walnut in a very shallow crack and shat my pants climbing pass it, but I guess it's all good experience! The tree that the book tells you to belay on top is not straight above the route if I did the right route! I belayed Robin in the cave with some really shallow but bomber cams.

I can imagine the spiciness level of this Pepper being in the super hot zone without 'Cameron' (our beloved number 6 BD cam).
Just keep bumping 'Cameron' up until the crack wants it no more. Probably the first piece of pro you can put in is about 4m up in a horizontal break (if you don't have #6). |
