The nerve centre of rock climbing in Wanaka
The cliffs and boulders of Hospital Flat offer a wide selection of styles and difficulty and it is common to find school groups, guided parties and recreational users all enjoying the area. Most of the cliffs get maximum daily sun, making them an ideal destination in winter months. The crags dry quickly after all but the most torrential deluges (which can cause minor seepage). Hospital Flat is conservation area administered by the Department of Conservation.
From Wanaka, Hospital Flat is reached by travelling northwest on Mt Aspiring Road (20 mins/17km). Just after you leave the lake behind, Hospital Flat comes into view, encompassing most of the hillside on the south of the road.
There are several campsites close by (Glendhu Bay or Albert Town are good options) or a room in Wanaka for the well-to-do.
Some confusing ethics have resulted in bolted cracks. This is largely a sport venue.
