Übersicht

Table Mountain is the iconic backdrop to Cape Town CBD It covers a large area. Most routes are multipitch trad climbs, with the upper sections of the mountain offering better quality sandstone.

Beschreibung

For the most part, all the climbing is traditional, unless otherwise specified. There are some bolted rappel stations to facilitate safe descent (50/60m 1/2 ropes needed).

It is common to catch the cable car up and abseil down to the start of your chosen route (The Ledge/Africa Ledge areas). Otherwise it is a 1hr hike via the India Venster trail, which involves some easy scrambling. The routes on the lower buttresses are also accessible via the first part of this trail, taking approximately 20-30mins to reach from the lower cable station.

Access to Nursery Buttress is via Kirstenbosch Gardens. The Boulders in Newlands Forest are tricky to find unless you have a local guide.

Some lesser known routes on the edge of Orange Kloof.

If climbing at Fountain or Africa Ledge, and the cable car is your choice to reach the climbs, pre-book cablecar tickets online so you do not have to queue up for a ticket.

Kirstenbosch's Rycroft Gate is the closest point of access for Nursery Buttress. Follow the signs for Nursery Ravine. Approximately a 1hr approach. The Classroom in Newlands Forest is about a 15-20min hike from the Firebase. Deadwood Boulder is a 3min walk from where you park your car.

25-35min hike to the Lower Buttresses.

Hike or via cablecar for Fountain Ledge.

Cape Town has a huge range of accommodation to fit every budget. Area that are close to the crag include the City Bowl and the Atlantic Seaboard.

Beschreibung

This is a tiny crag on the top band of cliffs about 150m to the left (East) of Platteklip gorge. Fortunately what good rock there is in the vicinity has a steep arete and face about 35m high. It is probably best to get a visual on the crag from the opposite (Western) side of the gorge then walk back across. A trail leads near the cliff edge and it is easy to set up an abseil point near the top of the routes.

Granite climbing in a quarry in the suburb of Higgovale. Quick and easy after work. Gets cold in winter.

Beschreibung

The only routes really worth doing are on The Polling Booth and, to a lesser extent, The Peanut Gallery. Although there is a smattering of other short routes on various arbitrary walls, these routes are basically crap. If you are really desperate, there are some unpleasant short routes on The Cinema.

Park here: (-33.942315, 18.402586) or (-33.941487, 18.401030). In more detail: from Tamboerskloof in the City Bowl, drive up Molteno Road, almost to the top, and turn right into Glencoe Avenue, drive to the end of the avenue and park before the boom. Please park considerately – not in the fire hydrant area, or in a way that will piss off the residents.

Cross the boom and walk for about a minute, then scramble over the shoulder to the right of the gate. Once in the quarry, walk to the right, first passing The Peanut Gallery on your right, to reach The Polling Booth, the largish flat wall at the end. The wall on your left as you enter the quarry is The Cinema.

Geschichte

The first routes (at The Polling Booth) were bolted on South Africa’s first democratic election day in 1994. Since then, other parts of the quarry were developed, but many bolts and hangers have since been chopped or stolen. Over the years the area has had a somewhat dubious reputation for muggings, but in fairness to the old crag, there have been no reports for quite a few years. In general, popularity has been growing recently, thanks to the cleaning up and rebolting of some of the better routes by ARF, and the fact that more routes have been opened here.

The huge Huguenot Slab boulders above Fresnaye/Bantry Bay and facing the sea and Robben Island.

Park in Top road in Fresnaye and walk up the tree line. Alternatively park near the kramat on the signal hill road and walk walk towards the Atlantic Ocean then turn left so you're walking towards Lion's Head but heading a little seawards. You will be on a good path. When you walk past the wood and concrete bench, look to the right for a small path which traverses across (aim for the Bluegum trees) to reach the Granite.

Mix of trad and sport. N.B. The sport routes were opened a long time ago and bolting of new routes is strictly forbidden and illegal.

Some of the sport routes require a 60 metre rope. Always put a knot in the end of the rope; a visiting Scottish climber died because he failed to do this.

Great climbing destination with a good range of grades and easy access. Recently formally developed by the Noy brothers.

Some of the areas close to the main path have quite a bit of trash laying around, if you're up for it take a bag and carry out a plastic bottle or two.

Park here: (-34.145914, 18.403342). The Roadside boulder (mostly an eliminate training boulder but well worth a visit) is a quick 5 minute walk from the parking lot. Follow the main path from the parking for about 10 minutes to the Roswell section with some good warmup climbs before heading up to the UFO boulder, Broncobuster or the other sections further along the main path.

From Cape Town, drive South along the M4. At the end turn left and then right and continue along the M4 (Man Road) until you get to the town of Fishhoek. Follow the M4 towards Simonstown. About 1km after the Fishhoek CBD, you'll reach some trafic lights, turn right into hillside road (to highway). Turn left and then continue straight along Echo Road, until you can park beneath the crag.

The Toad on the Road pub is a great place to end a day’s climbing. If a big sporting event is being screened, the pub can become quite vibey and probably not the best place to enjoy your beer if you’re not supporting SA.

Geschichte

After a short period of abuse (about 10 years ago), when some low-life thought it was fun to go and trash most of the anchors and first bolts of the routes, the crag was refurbished to its original state (thanks to the efforts of Charles Howell and Dave Hart). More routes were put up then, and also more recently by Tony Lourens.

NO BOLTING of new routes at the crag without prior permission from Selmanetix (Pty) Ltd.
I will only use the designated path up to and down from the Crag.
I will only park in the designated parking spaces as highlighted on the attached map.
Intentional dislodgement of rocks off cliffs or down hillsides is dangerous and will not be condoned.
Writing or graffiti is not permitted in any form on any rock, cliff face, tree or other natural surface.
I will comply with notices, instructions and directions by the Manager and / or the Owner.
I will not bring any vehicle onto the land.

No stoves are to be used on the property. (The means bring your tea in a flask.)
No overnighting / sleeping overnight on the property.
No drinking of alcohol, playing of music or any unruly behaviour permitted.
All animals including nesting and endangered birds should not be disturbed. Seasonal closure of Baskloof Crags may be required if nesting birds are likely to be disturbed. The feeding or intentional disturbance of any animal is prohibited.
No plant, animal, wildlife or any natural or cultural items may be removed from the property without permission. To cut, damage, destroy or be in possession of any plant or part thereof, including dry wood or firewood is a serious offence.
My access to the property is undertaken with due knowledge and appreciation of the risks inherent therein.

Just follow the hike trail for around 50 meters and pay attention to a less clear path to your left. That is the path to the crag and it is easy to get confused and follow the main hiking path that does not lead to the crag.

Great range of climbing at a comfortable crag, some of the routes appear to be pretty sandbagged. Please add your grade contributions (Edit route -> Your grade).

Beschreibung

This is a pleasant crag for the family. Dogs are allowed in the area as well. The crag generally dries out quickly after rain (one or two full days) and shade can usually be found (except during mid day). If it is not too hot, all day climbing is not a problem here. Most of the +/-40 routes are short but of very good quality, from easy slabs to hard overhangs. It is a great crag for beginners because of the ease of setting up a toprope. The climbing is generally hard for the grades, but vary from really easy to really hard.

Zustieg

Take the M3 from Cape Town. Drive up Ou Kaapse Weg (M64) and then down in the direction of Noordhoek. Turn right at Silvermine Road and use the parking area near Silvermine Village (-34.109044, 18.399776). Walk back to Kaapse Weg, then further 400m down towards Fishhoek until you see a small parking area at the start of the Peer's Cave trail (-34.113112, 18.398339). Due to car break-in's it is best NOT to use this parking. Follow the path to the top of the hill.

Beschreibung

It takes about 20 mins to get to Coppermine boulder field from the parking area.

Einschränkungen

You are not allowed to climb here according to the authorities that oversee TMNP (Table Mountain National Park). There has been a moratorium on climbing in the area until a suitable EMP (Environmental Management Plan) can be formulated.

But don't get your hopes up, as the EMP has been in the pipeline for the last decade or more. Translation: don't get caught climbing here by the Rangers.

Finally, the area is known to be a hot spot for criminal activity, with muggings at gunpoint occuring with some frequency.

Zustieg

Park at the start of the Kleinplaas Dam jeep track. Follow this for about 10mins until you see a path breaking off to the left (cairn). Follow the path until you reach the boulders. The main feature of the area is a prominent pinnacle, which can be seen from a distance.

Ethik

Stick to the paths and don't unecessarily trample or damage the fynbos. No chipping holds. Pick up any trash you find and don't leave fingertape or cigarette butts lying around. Brush off tick marks after you have climbed your problem.

Some of the best 23s in the Western Cape on a vertical face.

Beschreibung

Skoorsteenskop is a nice but somewhat forgotten sport crag in Hout Bay. It is a great alternative to Silvermine Main crag. 12 moderate grade routes (17-23), good rock, mostly vertical face climbing.

Most of the routes at Skoorsteenskop have been “ARFed”, a.k.a. rebolted with glue-ins.

Dont climb here is the Southeaster is blowing. It’s not pleasant.

Access is via a public servitude path, which leads up from Whittlers Way inbetween two houses up to the mountain. The gate is locked and access managed due to past crime in the area. Park on Whittlers Way in Hout Bay. The path starts immediately opposite #37 Whittlers Way, inbetween properties #32/32a and #30. (-34.023838, 18.371937)

Unlock the first gate, relock it please. Then walk up 100 m or so via the path to the 2nd gate. Ditto. Keep heading up the mountain, past the property on the left. Once you have reached the upper bounds of the property, turn left. After parallelling the property fence for 50 m, a few ill-defined paths lead up diagonally. Take one of them, they all tend to meet up somewhere and join to take you to the right (south) saddle of Skorsteenskop. About 20-30 minutes walk.

Endurance climbing through big roofs

Beschreibung

Big moves off good holds. Great venue if you climbing grade 25

Einschränkungen

Crag open year round, no permits required. Routes severely affected by the SE (i.e. don't climb here if the SE is blowing hard).

Zustieg

Drive south along Boyes Drive. After the Old Boyes Drive turnoff on your left, continue over the hill and down the other side. At the bottom of the dip is a fixed speed camera (painted yellow). Park about 50 to 80m after this. Remember to leave space for pedestrians to pass on the sidewalk.

The start of the footpath is through a doorway (with no door) in the stone wall on the right hand side of the road. It is marked "Peck's Valley". Follow the steep path up to a contour path (5mins). Turn right and follow the contour, which very soon starts turning up into the valley.

After about 10mins on this main hiking path, look out for a cairn marking the start of the approach to the crag (on your right hand side). Don't turn off the main path until you see this cairn, otherwise you will be bundu bashing. Follow the ever steepening path towards the crag (15mins). Note: this path takes you to the Sideline initially, but it is very easy to get to the main crag once here.

Great crag for steep climbing on good holds. Routes can get quite shlauky (greasy) when the wind is blowing hard from the SE. Crag goes into the shade from about 09h00 in Summer and about 12h00 in Winter

Zustieg

Drive up Ou Kaapse Weg from Cape Town. A fence has been put up by the naval base where the path used to start at the bottom, so now instead keep driving up to the top sharp bend and park either on that bend or next available space. It’s a couple hundred meters from Silvermine. (-34.0887831, 18.4304029). Look for a short path that goes down and meets a jeep track and go right and directly up the mountain straight towards the crag.

This area features powerful, short, bolted routes on steep rock, along with a few scattered boulders.

Access for the sport crag:

East side: Park at the end of Boyes Drive is a cul-de-sac (Godfrey Road) (-34.126395, 18.444611). Follow the hiking trail up toward the saddle. Near the saddle, after the second switchback where the path goes briefly down hill, look for a path sneaking off left up a short hill towards a large boulder. From the boulder follow the path up the final slope to arrive just east of Neptune's cove.

West side: From Main road turn into Clovelly avenue then take the right fork up Mountain road. Park at the top of the rise, the path leads up from a concrete driveway. Climb the paved path to just below the saddle then turn right onto an obvious well-trodden path 10metres before the saddle. Follow this between two boulders, past a cave, then just above a mini-gulley take a not so obvious turn-off left towards what looks like two boulders, aiming between them. The left "boulder" turns out to be Mermaid wall.

The best setting of a crag in the Peninsula. Great in Winter as all-day sun and dries quickly with the only seepage at one small part of one sector.

Zustieg

From Kaapse Weg, near the top of the pass on the Noordhoek side turn off at Gate 2. Park at the end of the gravel road (-34.090558, 18.421029).

Follow the ‘Steenberg Peak’ path past a huge square boulder on the right and continue along until the path turns to the right and starts ascending. Once at the top of the valley (± 20 minutes from the car), take the left path at the split for about another 10 minutes. Keep a sharp eye out for a small cairn on a rock on the left (and another on the edge of the ridge) which marks the vague path on the left snaking through the shrubbery down to the crags. The path starts at a rain water runoff point on the left of the main path and a group of large boulders to the right (-34.093400, 18.435723).

Note: If you reach another split in the path at a stone sign with a huge low overhang to the right of the path, you have gone about 100 metres too far.

Follow the vague path along and down through some boulders to reach a broad ledge. Go right (facing out) along this ledge, following cairns and down a little rock step. Continue along and down till you reach a large cairn. From here descend a steepish grassy gully to reach another ledge.

You are now at the level of the crags. Go right (facing out) for Killer Wall and Middle Buttress and left for the others. To get to Faithless Wall: When you get to the broad ledge after going through some boulders, turn right (facing out) and continue along this ledge for a few hundred metres (following the odd cairn).
