The Bluff The Lower Bluff
22 Predator - with Gareth Sport 12m, 5 Good
Thought we'd top rope after James led, but no sign of him so got on it with a chalk bag on feeling very sporty. A bit nervy getting first draw on and clipped, then sat on it. Went bolt-to-bolt from there, working out a good sequence among many many chalked-up sucker holds. Managed to get through bolt 5 clean. After bolt 1 it all works best as big moves between jugs.

20 Great Scott - with Gareth Sport 27m, 10 Very Good
Snaked in front of Alex on his draws before the heat. Barndoored off at the balance crux before finding the sidepull, fingers just caterpillared to it next try. Right of the bolts above the mantle is way easier than any direct. Had a look at the dodgy block on Critters Corner on the way down.

17 The Slot Machine - with Gareth Trad 15m Good
Good lead from Gareth. Unparalleled VCS dialed in nicely now, the forefoot sensitivity coming on strong, toe-top rubber is good in a crack.

18 Outboard Crack - with Gareth Trad 20m Very Good
Warmup, allegedly. Nearly came off at crux 2, wake up!

Had an epic. After the Sunset finishing after the sunset on New Year's day, for a 10-pitch day? What a great plan. Got out there at 6pm, still bastard hot, but got on as two ropes of two, following a pitch behind. Cooked like prawns up P1-2, and the P2 topout is now very dirty and uninspiring. By sunset we were mostly all at the bottom of the crux pitch, but Greg had mistakenly gone right after bolt 2 into the Mexican Americans crux, was falling repeatedly and knackered. After discussing the unappealing bail options, I swapped into leading the crux pitch by head torch, then settled in for top belay while Jonno seconded, Greg and Gareth jugged up. Topped out just before midnight, then soon lost the ridge track in windfall. After an hour of nervous random bush bashing near cliffs, we failed to pick up the track again, took a phone topo map bearing toward the kinloch track and bashed over to that for another hour behind Gareth the Sweary Bulldozer, then slunk down to camp, getting in at 2.40am on the 2nd. Camp-to-camp time: an appalling 9 hours 10 minutes. Swim, beer, snacks, more swearing, bed, rest day. More could be written. Type 2 fun.

2 16 12m lead by Greg
3 19 13m lead by Greg
4 19 30m lead by John Pitcairn
Sport 85m Very Good
A new year's morning multi with 3 on a rope, before the sunshine hits the rock. The P1 tips crack always provides entertainment. P3 cave exit could be 17-18 with the right beta I think, though Greg did a much harder full high heel and mantle effort. Managed the P4 crux much better this time. The big pillar before that with the chalked X is probably more secure than it looks. Took a wander left off the bottom of P2 and down via Welcome to Kawakawa hand line - not recommended at all, don't do that.

19 Pinch and a Punch - with Gareth Sport 20m, 7 Very Good
Now with 20% less sharp and much better for it. Just stay on and keep going. One of the best in the vicinity.

16 Jug Addiction - with Gareth Sport 20m, 8 Average
Some NYE shade. Gareth leading after 3 days of shoulder whinge.

17 Reggae Shark (Reggae Shark P1-3) - with Gareth, Grant Johnston, Chris
1 17 25m lead by John Pitcairn
2 14 15m lead by John Pitcairn
3 17 25m lead by John Pitcairn
Sport 65m Good
First outdoor visit for Chris, so why not make it a multipitch? Did P1-2 on gear with one bolt at crux. Shoes still not as sensitive as I'd like for that. Loose rock at top of P2 is a bit worrying. Had thought we might be able to get across to top pitch of DHMK to finish, but that looked sketchy and hard. Hot hot hot, rapped off.

19 Jugzilla - with Gareth, Greg
1 17 30m lead by John Pitcairn
2 19 12m lead by John Pitcairn
Sport 42m, 13 Good
In theory just providing a P1 top rope, but had never done pitch 2, which turns out to be quite balancy with a couple of committing moves until it eases after bolt 3. Nice top out, a smidge higher than Captain Caveman. A hurried rap off and walk back to camp in low light and spots of rain.

19 Dirty Dancing - with Gareth, Greg Sport 15m, 6 Good
The low end of 19. Always a slight sense of disappointment when the monkey jugs disappear for the crux.

Off the dog list at least. Has you thinking at the start for sure. There's probably a fun grunty direct.

Pretty damn balancy.

18 Alcoholics Anonymous - with Gareth, Jonno, Greg, Claire Sport 18m, 4 Good
I think I call 19 on this. Back on the new shoes. Hard start getting the first draw on if you are not tall, would be a bad fall onto the tree. Certainly woke me up.

20 The Skink Prince (of Bel Air) - with Gareth, Jonno, Greg Sport 15m, 8 Good
Not 2 stars, Great Scott is better. But still good. Did something different at crux, some kind of thumb-press out left.

18 Biggie Smalls - with Gareth Trad 15m Good
Needs a bit of a sweep. Didn't take enough #3s (take two), managed to overcam a shonky 4. Top protects well with a #2 nut then 0.2 and 0.1 alien.

20 El Tigre Chino - with Gareth Sport 20m, 8 Good
A final quickie before it got too hot up top.

17 Manbearpig - with Gareth Trad 15m Very Good
Used the Angela high-step beta at the crux, which keeps you out of the trench and more mobile. Great fun, good gear, nothing bigger than #3 needed.

17 Alice In Wonderland - with Gareth Sport 20m, 7 Good
Perfectly good gear close to every bolt. Took the left-hand crux (17).

17 The Mad Hatter - with Gareth Sport 20m, 10 Good

18 Outboard Crack - with Grant Johnston, Colin Trad 20m Very Good
Bloody good, and the upgrade is deserved. 2-3 cruxes and quite committing. Watched the sun set while belaying from the top.

18 Sneakin' In The Backdoor - with Colin, Grant Johnston Sport 15m, 6 Good
Back for a proper go. Bouldery start then delicate moves up to meet Rohan's Little Sister. Think it's probably 18 unless you're supposed to crank straight up over the nose, which would be an eliminate. Adds a very worthwhile few metres.

Sat 3rd Apr 2021 - Kawakawa Bay
Elephant Buttress Lower tier
16 Claim Jumper - with Paul Baron Trad 28m Good
Vegetated down low, lichenous higher, needs a better clean. If cleaner I think it would be quite good, has a nice physicality to it with some committing moves. Mind the chossy bits at top, but there is gear, and don't miss the anchor out left (the traverse to that is protectable by a #3).

16 Trunk Line - with Paul Baron Trad 35m Good
Much better after the clean at the bottom, but a lot of dirt will continue to rain down on it I think. Mind the somewhat chossy stuff up top, though there is good gear to be had. Squeeze between the kōwhai and the rock for a better belay experience, then extend yourself down from the tree anchor. You can rap off the shackles on the hand line and get down to the bottom of Taniwha Crackdown on a 60m rope, assuming you want to trust the hand line.

About time ... good lead Grant. Seemed like I faffed around for ages at the start.

20 Great Scott Sport 27m, 10 Good
Unsent. Repeated attempts and falls at the crux, shoulder didn't like it much, forgot my mantel beta, left a biner of shame. Really not firing on all cylinders.

16 Blindmans Bluff - with Colin, Paul Baron Trad 28m Good
There's a good nut on the right before you pull over the top of the overhang, and a decent bridged stance to place it.

16 High Hopes - with Colin, Paul Baron Sport 45m, 14 Classic
Got out there early before the hordes arrive and start queueing. 5 years since I last led this and every move seemed new. One long pitch is the way to go, but if so your seconds need to be aware of the rope stretch at the low crux (which is not 16).

23 Rise Of The Sloths Sport 25m Very Good
Gotcha! Just a bit different after ManBearPig. Avoided drifting right to the tempting thin horizontal crack at the start, that just sets you up for a really tenuous wide move left. Stayed just a whisker left of the bolts the whole way from the start, on smaller holds, but smaller moves are required. Linked into P2, got all crossed up and made that harder than necessary. A happy ending to a good trip in excellent company.

17 Manbearpig - with Angela Hewlett Trad 15m Very Good
Haha, cocked up the crux, but had a nice big nut above me. It's hard to go in for pro then get back out to make the move, made worse by forgetting my wide palm-off beta from last time. Angela did a much better job.

14 Honey Badger - with Angela Hewlett Sport 15m Good
All good gear.

17 Samurai Pizza Cats - with Angela Hewlett Sport 15m, 9 Good

A revisit before leaving. Left it too long between attempts, forgot my own beta, fell off into the usual tree, got suckered by face features, had a couple of pumped sits, but got up it, back can't be too bad. Terrific route.

Started up at 6pm, back down just after 9 in a party of 3. Nice to lead pitch 4, veered a bit left for extra overhang stardom in front of an audience of 26 boats parked up in the bay. Would give 3 stars if not for the hand line in the middle.

19 Hammerheads Bite Sport 15m, 6 Average
May have used a feature or two from Fuggin’ Jet Skis, but if those aren't in it's a bit bloody contrived. Frankly these are squeeze routes anyway, just one would have been better, and this also arguably retrobolts the trad line. Meh.

21 Ambiguous Throat Noises Sport 15m, 6
Deceptive. Think I was too far left after bolt 2, downclimbed and cleaned.

19 Drink Like A Lady (LeD) - with Grant Johnston, Gareth Sport 12m, 5 Good
Suckered too far left by Grant after bolt 2, needed a sit and re-compose but came close to onsight. Wander around is right! Probably suits the light and nimble climber, pretty good, will revisit.

18 I’m A Motorboater - with Grant Johnston, Gareth Sport 12m, 4 Average

16 Shoot Your Gun - with Gareth Trad 50m Good
Gareth pruned on lead and it's now looking a lot less vegetated. Really quite cool 3D climbing, reminiscent of Kestrel at Arapiles, but less plentiful protection and some fragile rock in places. A really good exercise in gear/rope-drag management, and perhaps an acquired taste, but I still rate it as a good long thinking trad lead.

Mon 28th Dec 2020 - Kawakawa Bay
Elephant Buttress Lower tier
16 Trunk Line - with Gareth Trad 35m Crap
Terrifying, stay the hell off. Filthy and difficult down low, objectively dangerous up top due to the huge detached death-flake. Much gardening and excavation for gear up the crack, veering left quite often just to climb on lichen rather than vegetation, then tried to stay off the horrifying huge flake as much as possible by bridging and climbing/protecting the right wall, with just one big hex in the flake gap. Topped out around the tree then anchored on the same tree as the hand line (not the shackles), which is quite old but needed for the sketchy walk-off. I will never climb this again, and recommend nobody else does either.

A bit of a back injury test - seems I can't put my shoes on without difficulty, but can still climb OK. Probably starting too far right, a couple of sits on the slab (which is starting to polish), then a long sling on the anchor and first-time fun up top.

16 Minions Rock Sport 20m, 7 Good
Some funky moves for the grade. Probably possible to make it quite hard if you read it wrong.

15 Lolly Scramble - with Gareth Trad 28m Good
Checking out G's gear, all good, with bonus tight tricam placement for me to swear at.

20 El Tigre Chino - with Gareth Sport 20m, 8 Good
Gareth's onsight wingspan is annoying. Tricky moves on sidepulls but over all too quickly.

15 Miromiro - with Gareth Sport 30m, 13 Good
About time I climbed this. Yup it's 15 not 16, and pretty good but fairly straightforward slab climbing. Had a play on the top of Curious Kiwi on the way down, that seems reasonably solid 19.

The Bluff The Lower Bluff
15 Purple Haze - with Gareth Trad 18m Don't Bother
Just walk on by. You'll be very paranoid about the rock by the time you get to the top. Treat everything with suspicion, and consider gear placements carefully, the rock is very crusty in places. Gareth chucked a few smaller bits off. Climbed in Gareth's slightly oversize pinks, but found mine at Secret Garden after this. Ran out of time, back to camp for lunch and pack-up.

16 Marshmellow - with Gareth Sport 20m, 6 Average
Couldn't find my rock shoes, climbed in chunky approach shoes, certainly upped the pucker factor on the moss. Gear a bit sparse at top. I never need to do this again.

20 Korimako - with Grant Johnston Sport 25m, 11 Very Good
Claiming onsight for the slab (previously onsighted the top on gear out of Lolly Scramble), with no use of the LH crack. Balancy, mono stack fingers and tiny feet. I rather like it.

15 Lolly Scramble - with Grant Johnston Trad 28m Good
Will be a good easy trad route when drier. Kept going into the obvious linkup with the hanging dihedral top of Korimako, which goes well on gear at about 17 and is excellent.

20 El Tigre Chino - with Grant Johnston Sport 20m, 8 Good
Draws on. A valiant near miss on the onsight by Grant. Crux is through the first 2-3 bolts, then it's all over.

19 Bitten By A Cobra - with Grant Johnston Mixed trad 25m, 4 Very Good
Quite good. Wants to throw you off balance up the crack, at some point you have to give in and swing onto the face. Not as jammy as it looks. Slung the small tree above the crack, kept going on gear to the highest anchor (beware of ledge fall).

18 Up The Rabbit Hole - with Grant Johnston Sport 15m Average
Feels more 16 than 18, unless you're not supposed to stand on the scary detached block at half height (but if not, why is it still there?). Chimney start is fun.

17 The Mad Hatter - with Grant Johnston Sport 20m, 10 Good

Superb climbing, bomber jams, plenty of no-hands rests if you look for them. Started to rain just after Gareth began seconding. Nice cleaning job Gareth. LH start, good moves on the arete, similar feeling to P1 of After The Sunset. 19 is a bit of a stretch I think, LH is 18. Incoming rain drove us back to camp.

19 The Sweet and the Savage - with Gareth Hall Trad 30m Very Good
Absorbing traverse with good gear. Took a sit before the crux to sort my head out, then committed to the high compressed undercling moves. Getting gear in around the corner had me going a bit after that. Top pitch is maybe a bit stiff for 16, in the same way High Hopes is. Ran both pitches together with acceptable drag, but resulted in poor communication.

We thought it was a FA to add to Flogg's haul, then Rafael informed us he'd done it a few years ago, and it was clean then, so guess not. Cleaned it a bit. Decent gear, 12/13 ish most of the way, definitely go up the wide crack at top before traversing to get full value.

Wow. I forgot how good this is. Lichen on the RH face doesn't detract much (but could use a clean), bomber and plentiful gear, really fun crux jam sequence above the roof. We were both absolutely fizzing at the top, got down and wanted to jump straight back on lead. Four stars in a 3 star system.

16 Super Natural - with Jonno Rau Trad 45m Classic
After 27 hours of cleaning, it's a whole different climb. Plenty of holds and good gear (take cams 0.3 to #2, a double set of nuts, plus RPs or small offsets to avoid runouts). I had 20 pieces in. Long, absorbing, and probably not for beginner trad leaders. Get on it.

Went up in the evening to see if there would be a link pitch on gear into The Sufferer And The Witness, allowing a full gear route to the very top of the bluff. There would be, but it would be short chossy and pretty average, probably need a hand rope, and cleaning it would rain crap on everything below. Effort best spent elsewhere. Linked P1-2, forgot Gareth's rope is now 56m and had to get down in 2 abseils.
