Yep, I'm going to give a route at THIS crag classic (and a Gerry Narkowicz new route as well!!!). Amazing white quartzite patina up a fairly blank box-groove system. Lots of technical bridging and stemming, with sustained climbing the whole way. The "classic" status is awarded on the proviso of the FA that he'll do some more "fine-tune" scrubbing on the upper 1/3rd to bring it to perfection.

I wouldn't have gotten on this if Jenga -intent on ticking the dry parts of the crag in a day- hadn't chucked a lap up it, and come down singing its praises. I started up the steep (juggy) start of the 24 to the right (to avoid the ledge doddle at the start of this route) and moved left into the lower steep-crux of this route, which makes a much more sustained pitch. The steepness is negotiated far easier than expected, and the slab proved surprisingly more demanding than anticipated. The final moves had me holding my breath.

Entertaining slabbing, with a few interesting sequences (and a lot more "ho-hum" climbing). Seems quite clean at the moment. I didn't particularly enjoy the contrived top moves to the anchor (I suspect that the route originally reached around right to the arête for the less "eliminate" finish). Ugh. Dirty, mossy, grainy, and generally unpleasant climbing. Not a "bad" climb, but nothing "good" about it either. A balancy start (that is fair at the grade), and a weirdly hard move to gain the arête proper about halfway up. Not recommended.

Done in the growing dark with a headlamp. Looooong and brutally sharp. No real stopper move, but consistently thin, delicate, technical and thought provoking. Classic marathon slabbing, with a bit of a sting in the tail.

A hidden gem. Varied, interesting, old-school climbing with pretty good rock (for the most part) and some disturbingly manky hangers. A funky warm-up.

Looks like an easy doddle, but its sustained from the get-go, and the dyno up the top is pretty full-on for a 22. Its not over until you clip the anchors (seriously... clipping the anchors is hard). Pretty cool in a hard kind of way.

Stiff at the grade, but interestingly awkward. Better than the lower-grade climbs on Duck Wall, so makes a worthy addition. Some dubious rock.

First 24 Flash! With a bit of footwork, this is easy for us tall people. Really nice climbing with some technical no-hands rests available to contemplate the next sections. Had a lot of fun on this. Bomber rock.

Very good. The epitome of fun climbing up the seam to the cave, then some entertaining (though pretty easy) jugging with some thought-provoking moves to the anchors. If this were at any other crag it would be a consumer classic (complete with quick-clip lower-offs). Definately worth a shot.

Placing the draws, but I belayed Bundy on this back before he ticked it, so no onsight for me. Tricky, with some interestingly weird moves, but probably about right as a "shorter" (read: less intense) 22. I sandbagged myself trying to climb it too directly, but eventually used both-seams and got the tick.

Waaaay better than it looks from the ground. The moves through the blankish prow are scary, fun, and techy, and the whole climb gets a great pump going. I had a great time on this one... Placed the draws, just wish I hadn't seen Ben climb it before so I could claim the onsight. Stays out of the sun until about 2pm, even when the rest of sunny side is baking!

Hard to grade this one... It's like a weird bouldery gym route on bombproof orange rock, with 2 really tough moves, but only about 12m long and with an ALMOST sit-down rest. Me? I thought it was a wicked end to the day, and quite different to the other climbs here.

"Grade 21 face climbing? I'll cruise it with my eyes closed"... Nope. I had to really work the footwork to make these very slopey-weird holds work for me. I wasn't sure I'd enjoy this latecomer to Bell Crag, but if I'm honest I really did. Probably harder than the 21 version of Jigger Jeff left of it.

Desparate, strenuous, awkward start for 2.5 bolts, then about 21ish to the top (but still pretty cool). Glad I got the flash on this, as I REALLY didn't want to do the start again (thanks for putting on the draws, Bundy). Good climbing, but tiring and frustrating to clean.

One move to the grade... Probably the hardest single move I did all day. The lower wandery climbing is a bit average, but once you leave that cave its great fun to the top. Don't try and jug haul the pillar! Leave it to baffle generations of climbers who climb past it wondering how the laws of physics (and geology) permit such a thing to exist!

Some sections of great climbing, but marred by crappy carrots (albeit, lots of them!), plenty of bad rock, dirt, moss, and the really weird line it takes up the feature.
My recommendation for the pitch grades are 24, 24, 23. Pitch 1 COULD be great, but the key holds are very very temporary, and I had to climb it on eggshells for the flash. We placed draws as we rapped over it, and ticked up key holds, though I had no climbing beta for the send. I went for the onsight epic on P2, and had just stuck the upper slab crux (certain it was in the bag) when I ripped off a huge -unlikely- jug and whipped. After belaying Monty, I had to settle for seconding it clean taking off the bolt plates. Pitch 3 had a tough start, then simply oodles of delicate climbing on crap rock at about grade 21. All in all, a fun day out with friends (and not quite the epic we were anticipating) but far from classic. |
