Ascents of Icebird having Beta

Cruised the first half, struggled at the offwidth and wasted lots of energy as didn't want to give up. Eventually after thrutching my way up I had to rest on gear. Great hand jams on top, forearms were so pumped

Cant remember the last time I thrutched this much!

Some of the highlights: Got all the cams I needed stuck between myself and the crack, desperately downclimbed, moved gear, then realised my knee was stuck, started to panic as I didnt bring my rusty victorinox knife to help relieve me of my knee but then I realised it was actually quite a comfy way to rest.

Slightly more rested I managed to wiggle my knee free, did the rest of the offwidth again. Made it to the handjams 3m from the top, but tired me could not get the jams to work resulting in me yelling take after which I nearly puked. After some rest and placing 5 nuts "just in case" I made it to the top where I finally met the legendary Nikhilesh Sharma hence the somewhat longer than usual tick.

12/10 cant wait to go again.

Bonus: 1 cam proved hard to retrieve, so I got to climb the offwidth & handcrack again as a topropesolo, amazing how much easier it is if you can just ignore placing gear and instead climb the face. Then got my microtraxion stuck in the crack(yes while it was belaying me) which added even more excitement to my day....

top roped it first then decided id give it a go on lead. some jugs with a few sus placements, lil crux through the wide bit. last bit is stella, got a bit gripped and had to want it

Very nice climbing, quite the deep end for Jayden's first proper crack climb.

Was cruising up this until I slipped off the last move :(((

pretty cool climb. the seaside sandstone felt more crumbly than usual. cleaning involved getting my elbow stuck in the awkwardly sized crack to retrieve gear. dolphins appeared when i was shimmying up the last couple of metres. all in all, quite an enjoyable route.

The whales put on a show whilst i belayed Coedie up this one. it's all there once you see it but there are a couple tricky points!

Went up pretty well until the final 1/3 of the climb. Found the crux to be the start of the almost offwith. Had to take the first rest here and then another closer to the top due to a very very stuck cam. Would definitely climb again.

Took all gear out clean then couldn't manage the last meter to the lip. Jamming game weak. Imitated the whales when I got to the top.

Oh trad. Nothing makes my mouth dryer. Great route, ran out of hand sized cams at the top which made it spicy!

This is a fantastic crack line that I will come back to lead next time.

Off-width bit in the middle is tricky but mostly just awkward. Plenty of opportunities to catch your breath by getting yourself stuck in the crack.

Blasted up the perfect hands at the end which was really the cherry on top of a great climb.

Future notes for self: protection in the crack is good, don't need giant pieces for the off-width because the secondary crack inside will take medium cams. Double rack from 0.4-4 should be sufficient. Pro at the bottom is less good, but the climb is easy. Save a green/red for the hands at the end.

Will be coming back to this for the lead some day. The hand crack at the end is a step up from the rest of the climbing, but has perfect jams!

My first Trad lead at perp if I remember right.

Very good and pretty tricky at the top. It’d be good to borrow a couple of extra bigger cams next time. Took a little fall when my jams failed me - exciting!

Wow so good. Juggy terrain till offwidth and then it starts. Fun!

Cruisy until the top where the crack is, need to work on my crack climbing techni and return to lead this!

Unreal. Juggy up to the offwidth, then a lovely hand crack finish, absolute better.

Had to sit to get the cam out over the lip. My arms are too trashed to untie it still on the rock.

first time i've cried on a route. likely not the last time. rock quality/gear combo at the bottom did not inspire confidence. also don't be fooled: it's a crack climb for all of 30 seconds. otherwise, sure it's great

Mega line, great moves, slightly marred by being able to skip the offwidth on face holds.

Surprisingly pumpy & a little overhang. 1 set of cams. Did not love the last quarter I was pumped and had to have a little sookie rest😔

Twas a tough choice between this and Windjammer for the OS Roshambo lead me here.

total class there is no concern about Offwidth at all.

No skin left after Nowra, so took the opportunity to practice my jams (which need a lot of practice...)

Definitely did not feel like leading this, but felt good to get in a lap on top-rope. I was disappointed to see how little crack climbing went into this route.

End of day tronsight. Lovely (if a bit fragile) jug hauling to glory hands with just a hint of wideness. Perfect way to finish up the day.

I would like pay homage to the Small Crack living life in the shadows, inside the big crack.

Dear Small Crack ,

If it wasn't for you my life would have been so different. The hind of my pants might have been coloured slightly different on the top out. You provided a sneaky hand jam on the backs of which I rested for eternity, impersonating like a chicken bar PhD to the spectators. You provided me with ample protection without having to tow a cam of the size known to cause bad back for climbers who wear it on their harness.

PS You are the hero we need but we don't deserve.
