scrambled then swung, led the runout slab. looked at the topo but didn't really understand how crucial the "0.3' cam" placement was nor how small 0.3in actually is, and also didn't grab wires off partner. wasn't confident about the slick 5.7 slab crux in the sun 8m above my last bolt nor the downclimb to it. eventually took slightly longer but marginally-higher-confidence path to placement out left. rest of the climb was chill.

Happy to have had the route to ourselves except one soloist. Everything I expected from Tuolumne - great protection, stunning views high in the alpine with a proper sense of adventure. Got a little bit confused at the top - probably better to stay right of the summit block? Start early and bring a headlamp (: One of the best days I’ve had in the mountains.

My first route in Tuolumne, 2nd pitch looked polished but did not feel slippery - awkward to place gear tho. 5th pitch is a low angle slab walk to the summit. Fun route with nice views of the lake.

Very nice route. The start is the clear face climbing crux and can be hard if you‘re not warmed up or used to the rock. Bolted anchor on P1, with rap rings. After that, you need to build your own anchors. The jam crux, for me, was P3, a thin seam with finger jams and narrow toe jams, without too many opportunities to relax your feet on the face outside of the crack. Last pitch is runout to the top, no pro to be had.

Descent: Rap twice (with 60 m rope) on the backside of the dome. With 70 m you might be good woth a single rap, but you won‘t see in advance if your ropes touch the ground. The rap station is right next to a significant tree. The rap bolts should be replaced, very rusty. On solid ground, go right to descend to your car, or left to get back to the base — caution, you‘ll have to scramble down some low angle slab, but easy in the dry, even in sneakers.

TRS the 5.6 access pitch, P1 and P2 as a giant 90m pitch. Would be true megaclassic with 3 more bolts in 90m (and only R-rated, instead of X-rated). It has some bolts to stop it being utter death, so why not be reasonable? I cruised the access pitch; clean P1 to the v5 crux (lots of falls to figure THAT out), then clean to the end; 1 fall off the belay on P2, then clean to anchors. An epic fight! Stunning, steep, hyper-technical thin knob climbing on an immaculate black streak. Truly stunning!

Its great to smash out 450m climbing over 14 pitches in just over an hour by free soloing it. I opted for the 5.6/5.7 steep crack finish to the last pitch to make it more exciting. Mostly this is low 5th class climbing with a very few moves at 5.4 and 5.5. I ended up ignoring the topo and making up my own harder pitches so I could do more climbing. An okay route, but too doddly to be a classic, and the unmarked descent from the top is terrible.

My best multipitch of the trip. We managed it in 4 pitches though it officially goes at 6 (resulted in a few tricky anchors)

First pitch is the supposed crux pitch with its 5.9 face moves right off the ground. Protected by a bomber bolt, most will find this easy.

I found the 5.7/5.8 sustained finger crack far more challenging. Especially since it is nearly a whole rope length.

Do bring some larger 4"-5" pro to tame the offwidth and allow easy anchor building following the finger crack.

Misread the route and became stymied by a few face moves.

Be leary of venturing too far left at the start of the second pitch and as you approach the mantle at the top of the second pitch. Also look for a great left facing crimp as you slap slopers on the 10d face traverse. The holds are there.

The 5.10c finger crack turns on as you near the top. It quickly becomes a sustained layback. Stem footers exist if you have the presence of mind to locate them (I did not).

Great climb. The approach is long but satisfying. Welcome to Tuolumne Alpine!! We managed it in 6 pitches. Had to build a anchor near the top of 5 to reduce rope drag.

The route is busy, but there are many variations one can climb to move around other parties. The chimney pitch can become a bottle neck when crowded so manage it with caution.

Another bottle neck is the summit. One has to down climb and traverse to reach the start of the descent. No rappel anchors on this classic peak.

5.8 Biscuit and Gravy - with Brett Fishel Trad 47m

Favorite climb on the bunny slopes. Crux is at the start with some thin edging and smearing up to the second bolt. Have a good spotter/attentive belayer. A fall before the first bolt is potentially nasty due to the v-shaped ground.

Bring a small rack to protect the left facing crack/layback. There's an easily overlooked bolt right after you exit the crack ( I missed it). So keep those eyes open! Or you're in store for a pretty big runout.

First route of the trip. Hello runouts! This route offers a great introduction to the ethics and style of Tuolumne routes. Bring a small rack to tame the runouts at the top.

5.7 Wild in the Streaks - with Brett Fishel Trad 50m Good
Thomas Johnson
It's a mixed climb with bolts at the bottom to protect the slimmer slab moves. The climb becomes quite runout as you progress upward. It is in your best interest to bring a small rack and place gear whenever you can. I think brought .5-#1 C4's and maybe a set of stoppers. Great introduction to the slabby knob laden granite of Tuolumne.

5.5 Northwest Buttress - with sritchie Alpine 460m
Jenna
Icy moves made this a sketchy simul climb in October. Ate up more of our day then planned so we had to bail on the Tenaya Triple and come off of Mathes Crest after the 2nd peak.

with Laura. Led P1 & P2. Good fun knob hauling, but Laura decided she prefers cracks. Plugged enough gear that it didn't seem as runout as supertopo suggested. Purple link cam for the win!

Set up a top rope. Struggled, bled, and gave up. My partner had better success.

Slid 2 feet at one point before my feet found new purchase on the slab. Would have been an exciting lead, to say the least.

Hard Landin' Brandon
Led P2 to the intermediate anchor and rapped to avoid storms. Just plain fun, and hilarious to watch my much larger climbing partner squeeze under the flake.
